Denver shoots 55 percent; six score double figs

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Voshon Lenard scored 19 points and DerMarr Johnson added 17 off the bench, to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 97-91 victory over the Washington Wizards on Friday night in the opener of an NBA exhibition doubleheader at Staples Center.

The Wizards lost two starters in the third quarter when Antawn Jamison injured his right shoulder and Gilbert Arenas was poked in the right eye. Arenas missed seven of his first nine shots and finished with eight points in nine minutes, after scoring 24 in Thursday's overtime win over Charlotte. Jamison had seven points and four assists in 16 minutes.

Nigel Dixon grabbed 13 rebounds for the Nuggets and Linas Kleiza chipped in with 13 points.

Etan Thomas had a team-high 12 points for Washington.

Awvee Storey helped fuel a 10-0 run with a 21-footer and a reverse dunk, as the Wizards sliced a 16-point deficit to 94-88 on Calvin Booth's two free throws with 3:25 to play. But Booth, Hiram Fuller and Donnell Taylor all missed layups down the stretch, allowing Denver to hang on.

Johnson helped pace Denver to a 53-44 halftime lead with 13 points. The Nuggets never trailed after Lenard broke a 13-all tie with a pair of 3-pointers 27 seconds apart. Washington got as close as 68-67 on Thomas' 14-footer, but Denver responded with nine straight points, including a three-point play and a pair of free throws by Lenard.

Washington's Peter Ramos picked up five fouls in less than nine minutes on the floor in during the first half and did not play in the second half.

The Bobcats played the Los Angeles Lakers in the second half of the doubleheader.
