NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The jitters that come with an NBA playoff debut prevented Chris Paul from taking his typical afternoon nap before playing the Dallas Mavericks.
Unfortunately for the Mavs, Paul was the same player he's been all season when the Hornets needed him most, and the same "M-V-P!" chants that rained down from the New Orleans Arena stands during numerous recent triumphs made a thunderous postseason return. Paul had 35 points, 10 assists and four steals in his first playoff game Saturday night, lifting New Orleans to a 104-92 come-from-behind victory over Dallas in Game 1 of their first-round series. "Today, after shootaround, I couldn't go to sleep," Paul said, explaining that he instead tuned in to Game 1 of the Cleveland-Washington series, then some of the San Antonio-Phoenix opener. "I saw the intensity of it ... and I was like, 'Man, this is serious.' "Only The Beginning
Chris Paul showed why it may be best to get used to hearing his name in the playoffs after dropping 35 points with 10 assists -- in his first playoff game. Here's how some other notable point guards fared in their playoff debuts:| Chris Paul | April 19, 2008 | 35 points, 10 assists and 1 turnover |
| Kevin Johnson | April 28, 1989 | 26 points in a 1-point win over Denver |
| John Stockton | April 19, 1985 | 8 points, 6 assists in 13 minutes off the bench in a win at Houston |
| Isiah Thomas | April 17, 1984 | Held to 10 points in a 1-point loss at home vs. Knicks |
| Magic Johnson | April 8, 1980 | 13 points, 12 rebounds, 16 assists in win vs. Suns |

The Mavs' defensive plan was to trap Chris Paul similar to the way they hounded the MVP candidate in their regular season finale. That didn't work so well in Game 1. So what should Paul look for in Game 2? John Hollinger explains. Story

Before tipoff, the Hornets hung their Southwest Division championship banner from the rafters after a brief comment from team owner George Shinn. "Many people didn't think we would come back; they were wrong," Shinn began. "Many people didn't think we'd have fan support; they were wrong. Many people didn't think we'd make the playoffs; they were wrong again." ... The Hornets missed five of their seven free throws in the first half, while Dallas made 16-of-19 during that span.
