New year, new Cavaliers team

Since Jan. 1, the Cavs have been a completely different team. On Dec. 31, Cleveland was 18-14, but went 35-15 the rest of the season. One key was the team's point differential, which was 3rd in the NBA after Jan. 1.

Friedell: Spotlight on Bulls GM

New coach Fred Hoiberg faces the unenviable task of not only trying to win, but also of doing so with a team that has very high expectations. Also at stake? Gar Forman's reputation. Two futures tied together

Hoiberg: "I think Tom Thibodeau is an excellent basketball coach." Says he hopes to build upon what Thibs built here.

Bradford Doolittle @bbdoolittle

I think Fred Hoiberg has already uttered more words to the media in the last seven minutes than Tom Thibodeau did in five years.

Hoiberg, Thibodeau not similar

ESPN's Bradford Doolittle: "[Fred] Hoiberg is so polar opposite in personality from [Tom] Thibodeau that the buzzword you keep encountering is 'anti-Thibs.' One NBA executive I spoke to raved about Hoiberg, calling him a 'great guy with absolutely no ego.'" Strategy different, too (Insider)

Bulls hire Fred Hoiberg as coach

The former Iowa State coach will be the ninth man to coach a Bulls game since the departure of Phil Jackson. The previous eight combined to win 5 of 15 playoff series, while Jackson won 27 of the 30 playoff series he coached for the Bulls.

What can 'Splash Fathers' do for you?

Things are a little different for the sons of NBA players. Says Klay Thompson's dad, Mychal: "Not only could they talk to us, but Steph and Klay could talk to the best of the best, the greatest there ever was. A Jordan. A Kobe. A Magic Johnson. ... That's as good as it gets right there.'' Father knows best

The Hoiberg hire is on Gar and Pax. The spotlight on them is hotter than ever given the circumstances of Thibs' departure.

It's Phil ... and then everyone else

Phil Jackson had a 27-3 record in playoff series during his Bulls career. The 9 Bulls coaches after him went 5-10, with 4 of those 5 series wins coming under the recently fired Tom Thibodeau.
