Brady Rodgers, Arizona State take advantage of Texas errors
AUSTIN, Texas -- Arizona State's Brady Rodgers pitched into the seventh inning and Texas committed two errors in the third to help the Sun Devils to a 3-1 victory over the Longhorns in the opener of an NCAA super regional series on Friday night.
After Arizona State took a 2-0 lead on the miscues, the Longhorns (47-17) almost answered back immediately in the bottom half of the third. After a single to center field by Brandon Loy brought leadoff hitter Tant Shepherd home and put Texas on the board, Arizona State's defense responded with a double play to end the inning. In the top half, with Sun Devils on first and second, Deven Marrero hit a grounder to pitcher Taylor Jungmann. He turned to throw to second, but neither shortstop Loy or second baseman Jordan Etier was covering the bag, allowing Andrew Aplin to score a run.Joey DeMichele later added a double to put Arizona State up 2-0."There were assumptions that were made that threw the timing off a little bit and as a result, and us not recovering offensively, that stood out as the separation of the two teams," Texas coach Augie Garrido said. "One little thing. Those are the nuances of baseball. Those are the things that a lot of people would never recognize why they happened. We looked clumsy and it was a lack of timing. That threw the game off."Rodgers (9-4) allowed eight hits in 6 2/3 innings."He went out and established the strike zone," Arizona State coach Tim Esmay said. "He did a great job of getting himself out of trouble."Mitchell Lambson came in and finished the game for a seven-out save."Coach calls me the silver bullet," Lambson said. "He throws me in there any time. This season I've started and come in relief. Not sure if I've had a seven-out opportunity this year, but I can come in all different times of the game."Jungmann (13-2), who had the nation's longest winning streak at 15-0 and who until last weekend hadn't been beaten at home, allowed three hits and three runs."Taylor pitched a great game that gets lost in this loss," Garrido said. The Sun Devils (43-16) added another run in the eighth when Joey DeMichele hit an RBI single to left field. It was DeMichele's eleventh RBI in the past four games."We seized a couple of opportunities and that was pretty much the story of the ballgame," Esmay said.
D Marrero grounded into fielder's choice to pitcher, A Aplin scored, J Ruettiger safe at second on error by second baseman J Etier.
J DeMichele doubled to left, J Ruettiger scored, D Marrero to third.
