MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Florida International's Garrett Wittels now has a 50-game hitting streak after a third-inning single against Western Kentucky in a Sun Belt Conference tournament elimination game.
Wittels moved within eight games Thursday of matching the NCAA Division I record of 58, set by Oklahoma State's Robin Ventura in 1987.
The Golden Panthers beat Western Kentucky 7-3 in the double-elimination tournament, adding at least one more day to their season.
FIU will play another elimination game Friday, needing to win that to remain in contention for the conference title.
Under NCAA rules, Wittels' streak would carry over into 2011, provided it's still going whenever the season ends.
