Dirtbags, Cardinal to face off Saturday

STANFORD, Calif. -- Steve Velazco singled in a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Long Beach State to a 4-3 victory over Saint John's in the first round of the Stanford regional Friday.

The 49ers (37-19), who snapped a seven-game losing streak, will meet top-seeded Stanford, who beat UNLV, on Saturday in the winner's bracket of the double elimination tournament.

PJ Antoniato and Eddie Schultz homered for the Red Storm (36-22), which lost in its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in seven years. Greg Thomson had three hits and drove in a run.

Neil Jamison (3-3) recorded two outs in the ninth to get the victory.

Craig Hansen (2-2) took the loss.

St. John's starter Anthony Vargas lasted 6 1-3 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits. He walked two and struck out seven.

Long Beach State starter Jason Vargas allowed three runs on five hits. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter.

Thomson put the Red Storm ahead 1-0 in the second with an RBI double.

Long Beach State scored twice in the fourth. Josh Buhagiar walked and Danny Mocny was safe on a fielding error, with Buhagiar taking third. John Bowker grounded out to score one run and Troy Tulowitzki singled home another.

Antoniato led off the sixth with his sixth homer of the season and Schultz hit a one-out homer in the seventh to put St. John's back on top, 3-2.

Travis Udvarhelyi's pinch-hit single in the seventh tied it at 3.

Putnam pushes Stanford past UNLV
Danny Putnam hit a home run and drove in five runs in helping Stanford beat Nevada-Las Vegas 10-4 in the opening round of the Stanford Regional Friday.

Donny Lucy also homered and drove in three runs as the Cardinal (45-12) won for the fifth time in six games.

Eddie Gill doubled twice among his three hits and drove in two runs for the Rebels (37-23), won had their four-game winning streak stopped.

Jeff Gilmore (10-2) pitched a seven-hitter to win his fourth straight decision. He walked two and struck out eight.

Jake Vose (10-4) took the loss after allowing nine runs on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and did not strike out anyone.

UNLV, in its second consecutive tournament, meets Saint John's on Saturday in a loser's bracket contest. The Red Storm dropped a 4-3 decision to Long Beach State earlier in the day.

Putnam's 16th homer of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth, highlighted a five-run outburst for the Cardinal. Lucy hit a two-run homer in the inning.

Stanford All-American second baseman Jed Lowrie extended his hitting streak to 11 games with two hits and an RBI. John Mayberry added an RBI single in the eighth.

Andrew D'Angelo and Ryan Ruiz also drove in runs for the Rebels.

UNLV All-American outfielder Eric Neilsen was 0-for-3 with two hit by pitches and two runs scored as his 16-game hitting streak ended.
