Trackin' the Top 25
Take a quick look back at last week's games and a first glance at the upcoming games for the Top 25.
1. Cal State Fullerton
Last week: 2-1. Overall: 16-4, 0-0 in Big West. (6-3 vs. Top 25).
Notes: Fullerton won its third series of the year against a top 10 team. John Meloan out-dueled Jr. LHP Ricky Romero (8 IP, 6 H, R, 2 BB, 8 K) Friday, sending him to his first loss as the Titans posted a season-low five hits. Still, Fullerton is averaging 13 hits and nine runs per game, which would rank first and second in school history. Jr. LF Danny Dorn ended Sunday's four hour-plus marathon with a two-out, two-run home run. Sr. 3B Ronnie Prettyman was 5-for-5 in that one and leads the Big West with a .442 average. Jr. 2B Justin Turner delivered at least two hits in each game and seven for the weekend.

March 24-26: @ Long Beach State
Last week: 4-0. Overall: 19-3, 3-0 in C-USA. (8-2 vs. Top 25).
Notes: Tulane swept a close series from the defending CUSA champs, getting a walk-off homer Friday from Jr. CF Nathan Southard (who hit .556 with four doubles on the week) and scoring four two-out runs in Sunday's eighth-inning rally. That proved to be the final inning, as ECU's travel plans didn't allow another frame to begin after 4 p.m. local time. Sr. 2B Joe Holland collected five hits (two of which were homers), four RBI and three walks against ECU. Jr. Brian Bogusevic's hamstring kept him out of the batting order and pushed his start to Sunday (5 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 2 K). Fr. Sean Morgan doubled as the closer and DH, with two hits Saturday.

Notes: The Tigers scored three times off Georgia closer Will Startup on Sunday to overcome a 4-2 deficit and sweep the series. Sr. CF Ryan Patterson is on fire. He cranked three homers in the series, two coming Saturday, and has seven in LSU's last six games for a total of nine on the year. Sr. LHP Lane Mestepey hurled a complete-game Friday night to earn his 34th career win. That's good for second place all-time and four shy of the LSU record.

Notes: Baylor became the first team to sweep a three-game series from Texas since Oklahoma State did the deed in 1999. Every game was close, with 2B Michael Griffin driving in the game-winner Sunday off Horns closer J. Brent Cox in the bottom of the ninth inning. Baylor held tight to a three-run third on Friday, and even Saturday was close until the Bears scored four times in their last two at-bats. Sr. SS Seth Johnston extended his hitting streak to nine games and has 14 multi-hit efforts on the year.

5. Georgia Tech
Last week: 3-0. Overall: 19-2, 9-0 in ACC. (0-0 vs. Top 25).
Notes: The Yellow Jackets extended their amazing streak of regular-season ACC wins to 25 Sunday by scoring three times in the bottom of the ninth inning, capped by an RBI single from Jr. SS Tyler Greene. Jr. LF Steven Blackwood drove in seven runs (including five Friday) on seven hits in the series as the GT offense kept rolling, rolling, rolling. The Jackets have scored nine or more runs in 19 of their last 20 games. Soph. LHP Lee Hyde (7 IP, 4 H) and Soph. RHP Tim Gustafson (2 IP, 0 H) combined on a shutout Saturday.

Notes: Soph. RHP Ricky Orta won his fourth straight decision Sunday (7 IP, 6 H, R) after moving into the rotation spot of Soph. RHP Chris Perez, who's suspended for violating a team rule. The Hurricanes hit four home runs in that game, including jacks by Soph. C Eddy Rodriguez and Jr. 3B Ryan Braun for the second straight game. Four of Miami's five losses have come on Saturdays, the latest coming when Sr. RHP Dan Touchet yielded seven runs on eight hits in 4.2 IP.

Notes: Jr. LHP/1B Stephen Head struck out a career-high nine batters Saturday (8 IP, 7 H, 2 R) and went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. Jr. OF Brian Pettway hit two homers Saturday and added another hit Sunday to tie a school record with hits in 21 consecutive games. Jr. RHPs Anthony Cupps (5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R) and Matt Maloney (3 IP, 0 R) shut down Florida on Sunday.

Notes: Arkansas won its fourth consecutive series against South Carolina by holding it to a .204 average. Fr. LHP Nick Schmidt (7 IP, 2 H, R, 11 K) and Fr. RHP Shaun Siebert (7 IP, 2 H, R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K) dominated in bookend starts as Schmidt became the first Razorbacks pitcher with a double-digit strikeout game since 1999. Sr. CF Casey Rowlett extended his hitting streak to 19 games and is batting .500 on the year to lead the SEC.

Notes: The middle-infield duo of Steve Tolleson and Chris Brown each homered in a nine-run fourth inning Saturday as Sr. RHP Zac McCamie (7 IP, 5 H, R) held down the Arkansas attack for one day. The Gamecocks tallied just four runs on nine hits in the other two games of the series.

Notes: The Bears earned their first sweep of Texas since 1998 and first ever sweep against a team ranked in the top five. It's the first time anyone has swept Texas in a three-game set since 1999 (Oklahoma State). Baylor did it by out-pitching Texas, with starters Cory VanAllen, Mark McCormick (7.2 IP, 4 H, R, 0 ER, BB, career-high 10 K) and Trey Taylor going 2-0, 1.31 with 17 strikeouts and four walks in 20.2 innings. Texas recorded four hits in each of the first two games, both season lows. Sr. 2B Michael Griffin delivered a game-winning RBI single Sunday and a game-winning sacrifice fly Tuesday.

Notes: Jr. RHP Bryan Ball (7 IP, 4 R, 2 ER) improved to 5-0 Friday thanks to Soph. OF Matt LaPorta's seventh-inning home run that broke a 4-4 tie. It marked Florida's first win in Oxford since 1997. That didn't last. Jr. RHP Alan Horne got blasted Saturday in his return to Mississippi (2.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R). Sunday's loss marked the first time the Gators have dropped consecutive games this year. LaPorta finished the weekend with two homers and five RBI.

Notes: Jr. 2B Jed Lowrie drove in three runs with his eighth home run of the year to key a four-run fourth inning to help Stanford overcome a 6-3 deficit. Jr. RHP Jeff Gilmore relieved Jr. LHP Mark Romanczuk, allowing three runs on four hits over the game's final seven innings for the win. Stanford hadn't played in 13 days because of a break for exams and a rain out on Saturday. It marked Stanford's second road win of the year in seven tries.

Notes: Jr. RHP John Meloan (7.2 IP, 4 H, 4 BB, 5 K) out-dueled Ricky Romero on Friday as DH Jason Seefield drove home the game's only run with a seventh-inning single. Jrs. Jordan Brown, Nick Hundley and Brad Boyer all drove in three runs on Sunday, but Arizona couldn't hold a 15-13 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. Sr. OF Jeff Van Houten's school-record 27-game hit streak ended Friday.

Notes: The Aggies didn't take their first lead of the weekend until the first inning Sunday. Sr. OF Andrew Baldwin went 3-for-5 with two doubles in that one, and SS Cliff Pennington added a triple and a home run. Jr. RHP Brian Wyatt pitched a complete-game shutout Saturday (his second of the year). It was the first 1-0 game at Dan Law Field since 1994. So. LHP Jason Meyer allowed seven runs in 3.1 IP Friday, his shortest outing of the year.

Notes: Rice got swept in a WAC series for the first time since 1997, the year it joined the conference. It has lost two of its last three WAC series dating to last year, when it lost at Hawaii. The Owls couldn't hold an 8-3 lead Friday, with Jrs. Bryce Cox and Lance Pendleton unable to quell a five-run Spartans rally in the sixth inning and Pendleton yielding two more runs in the eighth. Fr. Joe Savery drove in three runs in that one, one more than the Owls got the rest of the weekend.

16. North Carolina
Last week: 4-2. Overall: 15-5, 2-2 in ACC. (1-0 vs. Top 25).
Notes: North Carolina hasn't won a series against Clemson since 2000 and again struggled to score runs on the road. The Tar Heels batted .221 in the series and committed eight errors. Soph. LHP Andrew Miller allowed only an unearned run and struck out 11 batters Friday night as he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the second time this year. Clemson Jr. RHP/OF Kris Harvey held UNC to one hit over seven innings Saturday and also hit two home runs. Srs. Justin Webb and Greg Magum led the team with four hits each in the Clemson series.

Notes: Young outfielders enjoyed a strong weekend as FSU blitzed the Hokies. Soph. CF Shane Robinson is a machine. He extended his hit streak to 33 games, one shy of the school record. He also homered in the series. Fr. OF Ruairi O'Connor drove in five runs Saturday in his ACC debut. Fr. OF Jack Rye drove in two runs each on Friday and Sunday. Jr. RHP Mark Sauls allowed a run over six innings Sunday.

18. Oregon State
Last week: 3-0. Overall: 16-3, 0-0 in Pac-10. (1-0 vs. Top 25).
Notes: It's all arms for the Beavs, who have a 2.26 team ERA and are allowing a .193 opponents average. Soph. RHP Jonah Nickerson struck out eight and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits over seven innings Saturday to improve to 4-0, 1.03. Sr. 1B/C Andy Jenkins homered and drove in four runs in that one, improving his average to .435. Jr. OF Jacoby Ellsbury delivered four hits in DH G1, and Soph. RHP Dallas Buck struck out a career-high 10 batters, though his scoreless innings streak ended at 24.2. Still, he leads the Pac-10 with a 0.96 ERA.

19. College of Charleston

Notes: Charleston swept another SoCon series and is 33-5 in league play dating to last year. The Cougars homered five times Sunday, including the school's first back-to-back-to-back shots, courtesy of D.J. Wabick, Chris Campbell and Jess Easterling. Wabick leads the conference with a .463 average and 30 RBI. Sr. OF Byron Barber delivered a three-run triple to tie Saturday's game at 6 and drove in seven runs in the WCU series.

Last week: 6-0. Overall: 18-2, 0-0 in Big 12. (2-0 vs. Top 25).
Notes: Nebraska shoots to its best start since going 26-0 in 1983. The Huskers have won 10 in a row, but those wins have come against teams with a combined 10-43 record. Add in five wins against 2-30 Hawaii-Hilo and it's hard to know what to make of Nebraska; but wins are wins. Jr. 3B Alex Gordon has gotten fat during the 10-game streak, batting .595-5-15. He had six multi-hit games on the week, raising his home run total to seven. The pitching staff has allowed three runs or less 16 times, and the bullpen has a 1.97 ERA, allowing two of 26 inherited runners to score.

Notes: How 'bout some big-time pitching from the Red Raiders? Jr. RHP Brian Wyatt threw his second complete-game shutout of the year Saturday, pitching the first 1-0 game at Dan Law Field since 1994. Jr. RHP Billy Carnline allowed only an unearned run in 7.2 innings Friday. Sr. SS Cameron Blair jacked a two-run home run in the opener and leads the team with seven homers and 28 RBI.

Notes: It's Broadway and Furnish and pray for rainish for TCU this year. Jr. RHP Lance Broadway allowed an unearned run on three hits and fanned a career-best 11 over seven innings Friday before the bullpen nearly gave back a 10-1 lead. TCU scored four times in the bottom of the ninth Saturday to avoid a loss. Shelby Ford stroked a three-run double with one out in the ninth to tie the game before J.J. Estrada drove him home. TCU held a 6-2 lead Sunday before USM forced extras and ate through four Frogs relievers in a seven-run 10th.

Notes: The Trojans haven't allowed a run in 23.1 IP thanks to their first back-to-back shutouts since 1988. Jr. RHP Brett Bannister gets credit for nine of those innings. He allowed three hits Saturday in his first career complete-game shutout. Soph. OF Cyle Hankerd went 7-for-11 with six RBI to earn tournament MVP honors, while Jr. 3B Billy Hart raised his average to .357 and has yet to make an error this year.

RHP Jon Crosby allowed an unearned run on five hits over six innings Sunday to win in his second career start.

Notes: Jr. C Drew Butera went 7-for-12 with three doubles and six RBI against Gardner-Webb to raise his average to .330. Sr. OF Dee Brown hit a grand slam Saturday, giving him a career-best six home runs this season. Soph. RHP Tim Bascom struck out eight batters over seven innings to win the first game Friday. UCF took a 3-0 lead against G-W Jr. RHP Zach Ward (7 IP, 10 K), but the Bulldogs rallied for a victory. Cleanup batter John-Michael Howell, a Florida transfer, leads the club in average (.365) and slugging (.682). Jr. RHP Mike Billek missed the series with a groin injury, but will return to the rotation against Jacksonville.

Notes: John McCarthy registered a two-run double in a four-run eighth inning Sunday that helped the Cajuns overcome a 6-5 deficit and win the series. John Coker scored five runs in the game. 1B Dallas Morris drove in two runs in each game and extended his hitting streak to 14 games. RHP Kevin Ardoin struck out a career-best 13 batters in a complete-game Friday night, allowing five hits and a run.

Jr. LHP Will Startup couldn't hold a 4-2 lead Sunday, blowing his third career save. Jr. RHP Mitchell Boggs struggled Friday his first start of the year (6.1 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 5 ER).

Notes: Jr. OF Drew Constanzo went 3-for-3 with three runs and his seventh home run of the year Sunday, when Tulane scored four times in the bottom of the eighth before the game was called because of ECU's travel plans. Friday's game was that close as well, with Tulane winning on a Nathan Southard home run in the bottom of the ninth. No Pirates starting pitcher made it out of the fifth inning, with P.J. Connelly's 4.1 IP Friday the longest outing.
