Ambriz's four-hitter boosts Bruins
MALIBU, Calif. -- Hector Ambriz pitched a four-hitter, Brandon Crawford drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out double in the seventh, and UCLA beat UC Irvine 3-2 Friday in the opener of the Malibu Regional in the NCAA tournament.
The Bruins (33-23) play a winner's bracket game Saturday afternoon in the four-team, double-elimination tournament at Pepperdine, while the Anteaters (36-23) play in a loser's bracket game earlier in the day.
Ambriz (8-7) walked four and struck out six. Ben Orloff had two of UC Irvine's four hits.
The Anteaters scored their runs in the fifth on a two-out, bases-loaded error by third baseman UCLA third baseman Jermaine Curtis, giving them a 2-1 lead. Ryan Babineau hit his sixth homer in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.
Blair Dunlap, who had two hits, singled to start the UCLA seventh and stole second. Justin Cassel (7-9) struck out the next two batters before Crawford came through with his big hit. Cassel allowed 11 hits in 7 1-3 innings.
