CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Jay Cox had a three-run home run and a two-run double to help North Carolina defeat Maine 15-7, and match the school record for runs in an NCAA tournament game, set in 1948 and tied in 1978.

North Carolina (46-13) had to overcome early deficits of 4-1 and 6-4. Maine scored four runs in the third inning on four hits, including Kevin McAvoy's three-run homer. Kevin Ostrander also homered for the Black Bears (35-21-1).

Matt Danford (6-1) was the winner, and Mike Powers (5-4) took the loss.

North Carolina will face Winthrop on Saturday, while Maine will play UNC-Wilmington in an elimination game.
