Fresno State escapes with 9-8 win over San Diego
FULLERTON, Calif. -- Nick Moresi hit two of Fresno State's five homers, and closer Brandon Burke preserved the win with a pickoff play for the final out Friday as the Bulldogs outlasted San Diego 9-8 in the NCAA Fullerton Regional.
Moresi went 3-for-3 and drove in five runs, including a three-run shot for a 9-5 lead.
The Bulldogs (44-16) next face the winner of Friday night's Cal State Fullerton-Saint matchup. San Diego's Toreros (32-24) will play the Fullerton-Saint Louis loser in an elimination game on Saturday.
Trailing by four entering the ninth, the Toreros mounted a comeback on four consecutive one-out hits, including an RBI single by Justin Snyder and a run-scoring double by Steve Singleton that brought them within 9-7.
After a pitching change, David Harris beat out a slow chopper to first base, scoring Snyder from third. Burke came in with runners at the corners and struck out Jordan Abruzzo for the second out. Then, with the tying run on third, Burke faked a pickoff throw to third and wheeled to first, catching Harris off the bag.
Erick Wetzel, Frank LoNigro and Kent Sakamoto also homered for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State's Eddie Romero (13-2) gave up five runs on seven hits in seven innings. San Diego's Matt Couch (7-4) gave up five runs on six hits in two innings of relief.
Logan Gelbrich went 3-for-4 for San Diego, and Josh Romanski hit a two-run homer.
