Oral Roberts sends Oklahoma State to loser's bracket
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- A Chad Rothford double in the eighth inning sent home two runs -- including the winning score -- to put Oral Roberts ahead in a 5-4 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday in the winner's bracket game of the NCAA Fayetteville Regional.
The loss puts Oklahoma State into a game at 2 p.m. Sunday against Arkansas. The winner will face Oral Roberts (40-14) at 7 p.m.
Rothford went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a two-run home run in the fifth inning to total five RBI.
Oral Roberts starter Chris Ashman went seven innings and struck out eight, but did not get the decision. Erik Crichton (4-0) picked up the victory when he came in to pitch in the eighth inning, giving up no hits.
Oklahoma State (40-19) jumped out to an early lead when Corey Brown and Adam Carr hit solo home runs in the first and second innings for a 2-0 Cowboys lead. But ORU came back in the fifth inning when Rothford got his first hit of the game, a two-run home run over the left-center field wall that tied the contest.
Oklahoma State answered with another run in the sixth inning when Carr knocked in Keanon Simon from third base on a base hit to left field. The Golden Eagles tied the game at in the bottom of the sixth when Rothford hit a double to left field, scoring Andy Bouchie from third base.
Oklahoma State's got its last lead in the seventh when Ty Wright hit a solo home run over the left field wall on the first pitch of the inning from ORU's Ashman.
The Golden Eagles then answered in the eighth with two runs on Rothford's one-out double down the first base line.
Oklahoma State starter Brae Wright (8-4) lasted 7 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking two.
