Texas' national title defense ends in regional round
AUSTIN, Texas -- Jonathan Diaz had an RBI double and Matt Camp doubled in the eighth inning to give North Carolina State a 6-3 victory over defending national champion Texas in the elimination game of the Austin Regional on Sunday afternoon.
North Carolina State (40-22) advances to the Regional championship game Sunday afternoon against the Stanford Cardinals (32-25).
Hunter Harris had tied things up for the Longhorns (41-21) in the seventh with an RBI double. But Texas reliever Randy Boone could not hold off North Carolina State during its three-run eighth inning.
Diaz's double was his first hit of the Austin Regional. Designated hitter Jon Still led the Wolfpack (40-22) with three hits and two RBIs.
Texas' designated hitter Harris led Texas with two hits and one RBI.
Wolfpack starter Gib Hobson (10-2) lasted a full game, giving up five hits and three runs.
Texas pitcher Adrian Alaniz (7-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in seven innings.
