Baylor rallies past ASU to advance to super regionals
HOUSTON -- Beamer Weems hit a three-run home run in the third inning to help rally Baylor to a 7-2 win over Arizona State Sunday night.
The Bears (37-25) will meet Rice (52-10) in the championship game of the Houston Regional on Monday.
The Sun Devils (37-21) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Baylor starter and winner Cory VanAllen (8-5) walked consecutive batters with the bases loaded. VanAllen quickly settled down and allowed only five hits and one earned run in 5.2 innings.
The Bears cut the Arizona State lead to 2-1 when Mike Pankratz hit a solo home run in the second inning. Baylor took the lead for good in the third. Leadoff hitter Kevin Russo singled to right and Seth Fortenberry followed with another single to center. Weems then hit his homer to left, well beyond the 330-foot sign for a 4-2 Bear lead.
Baylor added three runs in the sixth inning with the aid of two Arizona State errors to open a 7-2 lead.
C.J. Retherford and Mike Jones each had RBIs for Arizona State.
Junior Jeff Mandel earned his eighth save of the year.
Jeff Urlaub (5-3) took the loss for Arizona State, which stranded 12 runners.
