Harvard tops USC in Henley Royal Regatta opener

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England -- Harvard beat Southern California in the Ladies' Plate for international eights at the Henley Royal Regatta Thursday in England.

The Crimson cruised to a three-lengths win and a spot in the quarterfinals against Stanford.

In the Diamond Sculls, Thomas Graves of Bantam Boat Club in Hartford moved into the quarterfinals with a four-length win over Stuart Davies of Australia's Mercantile Club.

In the new Prince Albert Cup for student coxed fours, Kent School from Kent, Connecticut lost by three-quarters of a length to Durham University from the north of England.

In the Visitors' Cup for club coxless fours, Porcellian of Cambridge lost to London A. In the Princess Elizabeth Cup for international schoolboy eights, Phillips Academy of Andover knocked out St. Edward's School of England.
