Notes: Making his third opening day start in three years, junior LHP/DH Joe Savery allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings before making his predetermined exit. Sophomore C Adam Zornes hit a two-run homer in the first inning to provide all the offense necessary for the five Rice pitchers, who allowed just three hits combined.

Notes: The Hurricanes lost their opening series at home for the second straight year, as Mercer took the first two games and bad weather caused the cancellation of the Sunday finale. The Bears scored two runs in the ninth against new Miami closer Enrique Garcia to steal the opener. With Saturday's game tied at five in the seventh inning, Mercer scored the go-ahead run when Miami reliever Carlos Gutierrez dropped a pop-up in front of the plate.

Notes: Junior LHP Nick Schmidt labored through 3 innings on a chilly Friday night, walking five but allowing just two earned runs before reaching his 65-pitch limit. The Razorbacks worked eight walks against Bulldogs ace Luke Burnett, and junior RHP Jess Todd struck out three in 1.1 IP to notch the save for Arkansas. The Hogs struggled against Tech starter Jericho Jones and reliever Brandon Hudson in Saturday's loss, and they trailed 2-1 heading into the eighth inning Sunday before junior C Brian Walker delivered a go-ahead three-run homer. Todd struck out three in two more scoreless innings to close it out.

Notes: The Toreros hogtied the Longhorns for the second straight year in Texas' season-opening series -- this time in Austin. USD ace LHP Brian Matusz struck out eight and allowed just one run in 5.2 IP Friday, and Texas' ninth-inning comeback fell one run short. Senior OF Nick Peoples went 2-for-4 with five RBI to lead the Longhorns' onslaught Saturday, and junior RHP Adrian Alaniz made his season debut in relief, yielding three runs over 4 IP. Junior LHP James Russell held San Diego scoreless for six innings Sunday before allowing a pair of runs in the seventh to spoil his Texas debut. Sophomore C Preston Clark paced the UT offense on the weekend, going 6-for-11.

Notes: Senior RHP Tyson Brummett bested Winthrop ace Alex Wilson in a fine pitcher's duel Friday night. Brummett gave up just one run while striking out six in 8 IP, and senior Will Penniall delivered a pinch-hit double with two outs in the eighth, then scored when Winthrop 2B Phil Carey dropped a pop-up. Senior closer Brant Rustich struck out Winthrop's Louis Ullrich with runners on the corners to end the game. On Saturday, senior LHP Paul Schmidt struggled in his spot start, getting knocked out in Winthrop's six-run third inning. On Sunday, the Bruins chased Winthrop starter Jason Franzblau with five runs in the second, and they broke the game open with 13 runs in the fourth, when the first 11 UCLA hitters reached base, highlighted by freshman OF Gabe Cohen's grand slam.

12. Cal State Fullerton

Notes: Cal State Fullerton paid Stanford back for sweeping the Titans in last year's season-opening series. Junior RHP Wes Roemer gave up 3 ER and struck out eight over 6 IP Friday, as the Titans scored seven runs in three innings against Stanford ace Nolan Gallagher. Fullerton overcame a 5-0 deficit Saturday with the help of two errors by Cardinal RF Michael Taylor on the same play in the fifth inning, allowing two runs to score. Junior RHP Adam Jorgensen struck out seven and allowed just two hits in 6.1 IP in relief of starter Jeff Kaplan. The Titans came from behind again Sunday, erasing a 2-1 deficit with 11 runs in the seventh inning. Junior OF Clark Hardman paced the Fullerton offense all weekend, going 7-for-12 with five RBI, including the game-winning RBI on Saturday.

Notes: Florida State's veteran rotation shined in a three-game sweep of No. 11 Tennessee. senior RHP Bryan Henry struck out 11 without issuing a walk in six scoreless innings Friday. senior RHP Michael Hyde followed with 10 K while allowing just two hits in 6.1 scoreless frames Saturday, and junior LHP Ryan Strauss went five workmanlike innings to get the win Sunday. That was all the Seminoles needed, as they scored nine runs in the second inning and pounded out 22 hits in the game, led by four for IF Tony Thomas. freshman D'Vontrey Richardson went 4-for-8 in the series while playing mostly DH, and sophomore C Buster Posey went 5-for-12. It was the ninth straight year FSU has opened its season with a series sweep.

Notes: The Sun Devils offense wasted no time kicking into high gear, producing five runs in the first inning Friday en route to 61 in the three-game sweep. Junior OF Matt Spencer, a transfer from North Carolina, had a monstrous debut, driving in 13 RBI on the weekend, including six Sunday, when he hit a grand slam. Sophomore OF Ike Davis went 9-for-11 with eight RBI, and sophomore 1B Brett Wallace went 8-for-14 with four RBI. The Sun Devils also got solid pitching from a number of newcomers, including Friday starter Brian Flores, who struck out five and allowed just an unearned run in 5 IP. Sophomore LHP Joey Parigi struck out six in 4 IP Sunday in his first start since transferring from Texas, and freshman RHP Mike Leake picked up a save with four hitless innings of relief.

Notes: The Toreros followed up their season-opening sweep of Cal Poly with a series win at Texas -- the second straight year they have beaten the Longhorns in February. Sophomore LHP Brian Matusz picked up his second win of the year with 5.2 IP on Friday, striking out eight and allowing just one run. The Longhorns put up nine runs in four innings against sophomore LHP Josh Romanski on Saturday, and three USD homers weren't enough to bridge the early deficit. Junior RHP Matt Couch delivered six innings of one-run ball Sunday, and senior C Jordan Abruzzo hit a two-run homer in the seventh to put the Toreros ahead for good.

Arencibia, but it was too little, too late, as sophomore LHP Lance McClain was roughed up for 9 ER in the second inning.

Thames went 3-for-3 with a triple Saturday, but junior RHP Jason Dominguez gave up seven runs in two-plus innings and Pepperdine's comeback bid fell short. The Waves overcame a 4-0 deficit to tie Sunday's game 6-6, but sophomore closer Brett Hunter allowed the game-winning run on an RBI single by UNLV's Michael Brenly in the bottom of the ninth.

On Saturday, the Eagles scored six runs in the third inning on four singles and five walks, and junior RHP Ryan Schwartz made it stand up, yielding just two earned runs over 6.2 IP. Winthrop pitching was hammered Sunday, when starter Jason Franzblau failed to make it out of the second inning and UCLA scored 13 times in the third.
