Thang's power-play goal beats Huntsville in second OT
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Ryan Thang scored a power-play goal 15:18 into the second overtime to give top-seeded Notre Dame a 3-2 victory over Alabama-Huntsville on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA hockey tournament.
With Huntsville's Scott Kalinchuk serving a holding-the-stick penalty, Thang beat goalie Marc Narduzzi with a shot from the high slot.
The Irish (32-6-3) will play Michigan State on Saturday night in the Midwest Regional final.
Josh Sciba and Thang scored first-period goals for Notre Dame, but Huntsville (13-20-3) rallied to tie it in the second on goals by Dominik Rozman and Cale Tanaka.
With 3:34 left in regulation, an apparent goal by Thang was disallowed when the officials ruled he kicked it into the net.
David Brown made 28 saves for the Irish.
