Florida State falls after 1-2 record in ACC tourney

1. Vanderbilt

Overall: 51-11, 22-8 in SEC. (8-4 vs. Top 25).
Notes: The Commodores became the first team since the SEC tournament adopted its current format in 1996 to lose its opener and then win five straight to win the championship. In its third appearance in the SEC title game in the last four years, Vandy won its first championship since 1980. Vanderbilt's stars excelled on the big stage, as junior LHP David Price (9 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 11 K) shut down Mississippi State, and the offense was led by sophomore 3B Pedro Alvarez (13-for-24, 2 HR, 3 2B, 8 RBI) and junior OF Dominic de la Osa (9-for-24, 2 HR, 2 2B, 7 RBI).

2. Rice

Overall: 49-12, 22-2 in CUSA. (6-5 vs. Top 25).
Notes: Rice won its second straight Conference USA championship, slugging its way through its final two games after its pitching depth was thinned. Senior RHP Ryne Tacker, the CUSA pitcher of the year, left Thursday's game against Memphis in the first inning with arm soreness, but junior RHP Matt Langwell (7.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K) picked up the slack in relief. Sophomore 2B Aaron Luna set a CUSA tournament record by driving in seven runs in his two-homer day in Rice's 20-9 win against Memphis on Saturday, and sophomore OF Jared Gayhart (2-for-6, HR, 6 RBI) led the offense Sunday.

3. North Carolina

Notes: The Tar Heels won their first ACC tournament championship since 1990. The most encouraging development for UNC was the strong performances of freshman RHP Alex White (7 IP, 2 H, 0 R against Virginia on Saturday) and junior RHP Luke Putkonen (6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K against Wake Forest on Sunday).

Notes: After Gonzaga beat a rusty sophomore LHP Brian Matusz (4.1 IP, 5 ER) on Friday, the Toreros responded with 26 runs over the next two days. Senior C Jordan Abruzzo (4-for-6, 3 RBI) led the offense Saturday, and senior 1B Daniel Magness (4-for-4, 3 RBI) paced a 15-hit attack Sunday.

5. Texas

Notes: The Longhorns went 2-1 in pool play but failed to qualify for the Big 12 championship game, as Texas A&M's victory over Texas gave the Aggies the tiebreaker. The 'Horns scored 10 runs in the third inning against Kansas State. Senior 1B Chance Wheless went 9-for-12 with eight RBIs in the tournament.

6. Arizona State

Notes: The Sun Devils won their first Pac-10 championship since 2000 by taking a series against Arizona that was moved up to Wednesday through Friday to allow ASU coach Pat Murphy to join the Division I baseball committee as it began deciding the field of 64. Freshman RHP Mike Leake (6 IP, 4 ER) improved to 12-1 on Wednesday. Junior LHP Josh Satow (7 IP, 2 ER) beat Arizona ace Preston Guilmet (6 IP, 8 R, 4 ER) on Thursday.

7. Florida State

Notes: Florida State went 1-2 in pool play and failed to reach the ACC championship game. Sophomore C Buster Posey drove in four runs in the win against Wake Forest. Senior RHP Bryan Henry (5.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) suffered his first loss of the season Saturday, falling to 14-1.

Notes: Virginia went 2-1 in pool play, but its loss to North Carolina gave the Heels the tiebreaker and prevented the Cavaliers from advancing to the ACC championship game. Sophomore RHP Jacob Thompson (8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) improved to 11-0, 1.35 with the victory over NC State.

9. UC Irvine

Notes: The Anteaters finish in second place in the Big West, a game behind UC Riverside. UCI won series against Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton and UCR. Sophomore RHP Scott Gorgen (9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 11 K) was masterful in Friday's win over Highlanders ace James Simmons. Senior 2B Cody Cipriano (3-for-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) paced UCI's 16-hit barrage Sunday.

10. Coastal Carolina

Notes: The Chanticleers added a Big South tournament title to their regular-season championship by running unblemished through the tourney. Junior OF Tommy Baldridge (7-for-13) and senior 3B Derek Martin (8-for-13) paced the Coastal offense in the four games.

11. Arkansas

Notes: The Hogs got three strong starting pitching performances to reach the SEC championship game unblemished, but they'll have to settle for runners-up. Junior LHP Nick Schmidt (9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K) was dominant against Alabama, but junior RHP Jess Todd (8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 17 K) outdid him in the first win against South Carolina, setting a school record and SEC tournament record for strikeouts in a game. Junior RHP Duke Welker (7 IP, 1 ER, 8 K) pitched Arkansas past the Gamecocks the second time.

12. South Carolina

Notes: South Carolina couldn't beat Arkansas, but won a couple of hard-fought contests against Florida. The Gamecocks got encouraging outings from junior RHP Harris Honeycutt (6.1 IP, 3 ER) and sophomore RHP Mike Cisco (7 IP, 2 ER, 8 K) in the two wins.

13. Texas A&M

Notes: Texas A&M won its first Big 12 tournament championship after going 2-1 in pool play and pounding out a season-high 20 hits against Baylor in the title game. Senior C Craig Stinson earned tournament MVP honors by going 11-for-19 with a home run and nine RBIs. The Aggies played solid fundamental baseball all week, committing only one error (.993 fielding percentage). Junior LHP Kirkland Rivers made just his second start of the season against Texas and picked up the win, allowing three runs over 6.2 IP.

14. Missouri

Notes: The Tigers dropped their first two games in pool play but salvaged their finale by throttling Oklahoma State for the fourth time in two weeks. Junior 2B Brock Bond (4-for-5, 4 RBI) and junior DH Jacob Priday (2-for-5, 2B, HR, 5 RBI) paced Missouri's 14-hit attack against the Cowboys.

15. Wichita State

Overall: 49-18, 20-4 in MVC. (4-5 vs. Top 25).
Notes: The Shockers lost their MVC tournament opener against Missouri State even though Bears ace Ross Detwiler had to leave the game after three innings with a split fingernail. But WSU won three straight games to force a decisive championship game with Creighton. The Shockers stormed back from a 6-1 deficit to force extra innings, then scored three in the top of the 11th only to give the lead back in the bottom of the frame and succumb in the 12th.

16. TCU

Overall: 46-12, 20-3 in MWC (0-3 vs. Top 25).
Notes: The Horned Frogs added a conference tournament championship to their regular-season crown by sweeping through three games. Junior RHP Jake Arrieta (7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K) turned in one of his best starts of the year in the win against UNLV, and the Frogs came from behind in the late innings to win both games against BYU. TCU has now won 12 of its last 13.

17. Arizona

Overall: 40-15, 15-9 in Pac-10 (7-7 vs. Top 25).
Notes: Arizona needed to sweep the rival Sun Devils to tie for the Pac-10 championship, but instead the Wildcats dropped the first two games and had to settle for second place. Sophomore RHP Preston Guilmet (6 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 7 K) took his second loss of the season Thursday. Junior 1B C.J. Ziegler and senior OF Bill Rhinehart combined to hit for the cycle in Friday's win, going 5-for-11 with eight RBIs.

18. Clemson

Notes: The Tigers went 2-1 in pool play and won their third game against Florida State this season, but their loss against Wake Forest gave the Demon Deacons the tiebreaker and the right to advance to the ACC championship. Clemson beat Miami on freshman OF Alex Lee's suicide squeeze in the 13th inning. Junior RHP David Kopp (9 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K) turned in a gem against the Seminoles and became the first pitcher this season to beat FSU's Bryan Henry.

19. UC Riverside

Notes: The Highlanders dropped their first weekend series since April 13-15 at Washington, but they clinched their first-ever Big West championship with Saturday's win. Sophomore RHP Matt Montgomery (8.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K) won his third consecutive since taking over for injured Marc Rzepczynski as the Saturday starter.

20. Creighton

Overall: 44-14, 19-5 in MVC (2-4 vs. Top 25).
Notes: The Bluejays captured their first MVC tournament championship in dramatic fashion. Creighton reached the finals by winning its first three games, but Wichita State forced a decisive second game by winning a 2-1 decision in Saturday's first game. Creighton took a 6-1 lead into the eighth inning of the nightcap behind a strong outing from junior RHP/LHP Pat Venditte (6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K), but the Shockers put up four against Creighton closer Andy Masten and added another in the ninth to force extra innings. Wichita State scored three times in the 11th, but Creighton answered with three of its own in the bottom of the frame before winning on senior OF Andrew Small's walk-off RBI double in the 12th.

21. Long Beach State

Notes: The Dirtbags avenged a nonconference series loss to Cal State Fullerton by winning the one that really mattered. LBSU tied UC Irvine for second place in the Big West, a game behind UC Riverside. The Dirtbags will host a regional for the third time next week. LBSU came from behind Saturday with seven runs over the final two innings, with junior C Travis Howell (4-for-4, 3 RBI) leading the way. Howell drove in three more Sunday.

22. Charlotte

Notes: Charlotte won its first A-10 tournament championship by destroying the field, winning their three games by a combined score of 44-9. Going back to their final regular-season series against Richmond, the 49ers have outscored their opponents 64-11 in their last six games. Charlotte rides a nine-game winning streak into the NCAA tournament. Senior RHP Adam Mills (8 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) picked up his school-record 13th win in the blowout against Rhode Island.

23. Rutgers

Overall: 41-19, 20-7 in Big East (1-2 vs. Top 25).
Notes: Rutgers won its third Big East tournament championship and first since 2000. The Scarlet Knights' 41 wins are the second-most in school history. Junior SS Todd Frazier won the tournament's MVP honors by going 13-for-25 with three homers, five doubles and seven RBIs. His 12 runs -- a tournament record -- were more than St. John's, South Florida, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Villanova combined to score in the tournament. Rutgers has hit 60 home runs on the season, a school record.

Notes: The Waves were idle while Gonzaga and San Diego battled for the West Coast Conference title.

25. Mississippi

Overall: 37-23, 16-14 in SEC. (12-10 vs. Top 25).
Notes: The Rebels won their first two games and could have punched their ticket to the SEC title game with one win against a Vanderbilt club trying to run through the loser's bracket, but they couldn't pull it off. Junior RHP Will Kline (9 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K) dominated in the win against Mississippi State, and sophomore RHP Lance Lynn (7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 10 K) was very strong against Tennessee. The Rebels took a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning of the second game against Vandy, but the Commodores scored a run to force extra innings. Ole Miss responded with three in the top of the 10th against Vandy closer Casey Weathers, but Vandy answered with four of its own in the bottom of the frame.

Notes: The Cowboys limp into the NCAA tournament on a six-game losing streak after going winless at the Big 12 tournament in their home state. Silver lining: OSU did get a solid start from sophomore LHP Joe Kent (6.1 IP, 3 ER, 8 K) in the loss to Baylor, and senior RHP Oliver Odle (7 IP, 2 ER) pitched well against Oklahoma before the Cowboys' bullpen imploded. Oklahoma State will need some quality starts to make a run in the NCAA tournament.

Michigan (23)

Notes: Michigan, the Big Ten's regular-season champion, went two-and-'cue at the conference tournament and has lost six of its last nine games. The Wolverines scored three in the ninth to force extra innings against Penn State, but the Nittany Lions got a solo homer in the 10th to win it.
