Top-seeded Commodores score on error, avoid loss in NCAAs
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Ryan Flaherty scored on pitcher Ben Wilshire's error in the bottom of the 11th inning to give top-ranked Vanderbilt a 2-1 victory over Austin Peay in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
With runners at second and third, Shea Robin tapped a grounder to Wilshire, who mishandled the ball. Flaherty, who had singled, scored from third base.
Vanderbilt (52-11) will face Michigan on Saturday, while Austin Peay will play Memphis in an elimination game.
Vanderbilt's David Price and Austin Peay's Shawn Kelley engaged in a pitcher's duel most of the night. Price shut out the Governors until the top of the ninth, when Tyler Farrar's home run tied it at 1 and forced extra innings.
Price struck out 17, matching his career high. Casey Weathers (12-2) earned the victory in relief, striking out five in two innings.
Kelley pitched 10 innings, surrendering five hits and striking out nine. His wild pitch in the sixth allowed Brad French to score from third base.
David Vicini (2-2) took the loss.
Michigan 10, Memphis 7
Nate Recknagel and Doug Pickens each drove in three runs for Michigan (40-16), and Zach Putnam (8-4) pitched eight innings and had a two-run double in the seventh.
Memphis dropped to 36-26.
Myrtle Beach Regional
Clemson 3, St. John's 2
Brad Chalk's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave Clemson the win.
The Tigers (39-21) scored two runs in the ninth. Doug Hogan tripled and came home on a wild pitch to tie it at 2.
That set up Chalk's winning single off Colin Lynch (1-2). The ball skipped off shortstop Jeff Grantham's glove and slowly rolled into left field, allowing Wilson Boyd to score just ahead of the tag.
Chalk, who returned last week after missing a month with a stress fracture in his lower back, was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Addison Johnson also had three hits and an RBI.
Alan Farina (6-3) was the winner in relief.
St. John's is 40-18.
Coastal Carolina 7, VCU 1
Bobby Gagg (12-2) allowed just an unearned run in 7 1/3 innings, and Coastal Carolina (49-11) scored five runs in the third, all after what was supposed to be a sacrifice bunt by Dom Duggan fell for a single.
Virginia Commonwealth (37-22), committed three errors, all in the infield. Before Friday, VCU had committed just three errors in its previous 20 games.
Long Beach Regional
Ill.-Chicago 4, Long Beach St. 1
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Ryan Zink held Long Beach State to one hit over eight innings and Illinois-Chicago upset top-seeded Long Beach State (37-19) for its first NCAA tournament win.
Zink (7-3) who had Tommy John elbow surgery last year, struck out five and walked one for the Flames (35-19). David Cales struck out the side for his 13th save.
Micky Pingree hit a two-out, two-run double in the eighth to add to the Flames' 2-1 lead.
UCLA 7, Pepperdine 3
Tyson Brummett (10-5) pitched 8 2/3 innings, and Cody Decker homered and had four RBIs to lead UCLA (31-26) past Pepperdine (35-21).
Tim Murphy came on with two outs in the ninth with the bases loaded and got Donald Brown to pop out to end the game. Pepperdine sent nine men to the plate and scored three times in the ninth before Murphy quieted the rally. Ryan Heroy hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the Waves to cut UCLA's lead to 7-3.
Columbia, Mo., Regional
Louisville 13, Miami 7
Daniel Burton had three hits and four RBIs, including a tiebreaking two-run single in the fifth for Louisville (41-20).
Jorge Castillo hit a game-tying three-run home run in the fourth and Derrick Alfonzo was 5-for-6 with a homer and two RBIs for the Cardinals.
Jemile Weeks had a three-run triple and Richard O'Brien homered for Miami (36-23).
Missouri 10, Kent State 2
Aaron Crow (9-3) threw a five-hitter for his second complete game of the season, and John McKee hit a grand slam for host Missouri (41-16).
Greg Rohan's two-run homer in the seventh was the only damage against Crow, who had eight strikeouts and no walks. Kent State dropped to 33-25.
Oregon St. 5, Rutgers 1
Joe Paterson (8-6) allowed one run on five hits in six innings to help defending champion Oregon State (39-17) beat Rutgers (41-20).
Scott Santschi was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, Jordan Lennerton finished 2-for-4 with a run for the Beavers.
Virginia 5, Lafayette 1
Brandon Guyer hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and Sean Doolittle (8-3) pitched 7 2/3 innings for his Virginia-record 22nd career victory.
Jake Rule got the last four outs for Virginia (44-14).
Lafayette dropped to 33-19.
Chapel Hill Regional
North Carolina 6, Jacksonville 0
Robert Woodard (10-2) threw eight shutout innings for North Carolina to improve to 22-0 at cozy Boshamer Stadium.
Woodard scattered seven hits in his longest outing in two months, striking out five and leading North Carolina (49-12) to its fourth straight win and a successful first step toward a possible return to the College World Series.
Jacksonville dropped to 34-27.
East Carolina 9, Western Carolina 8
Jamie Ray's bases-loaded single in the eighth inning drove in the go-ahead run and East Carolina (40-21) rallied from a four-run deficit to beat Western Carolina (40-19).
Corey Kemp's three-run homer in the sixth started the comeback.
Southern Miss 14, Troy 1
Luke Adkins and Brian Dozier hit home runs and Southern Mississippi took advantage of five errors to beat Troy.
Adkins had a two-run homer in the first inning to help the Golden Eagles (39-21) race to a 9-0 lead after two innings. Dozier added a solo homer in the fourth inning and Southern Miss had 16 hits against Troy (34-26).
Ryan Belanger (8-4) was the winner.
Mississippi 14, Sam Houston St. 5
Zach Miller tripled and scored the tiebreaking run in the fifth, and added a two-run single in the sixth for Mississippi (38-23).
Will Kline (7-2) worked six innings for the victory, and Justin Cryer closed out the Bearkats (38-23) with two innings of scoreless relief.
Arizona 4, Oral Roberts 3
Bill Rhinehart blooped a single into short left-center in the seventh to drive in the go-ahead run for Arizona.
Closer Jason Stoffel pitched two scoreless innings and Arizona (41-15) improved to 35-0 when leading after seven innings. Starter Preston Guilmet (12-2) and Stoffel combined to strike out 16 batters.
New Orleans 7, Wichita St. 6
Brandon Bowser drove in two runs in the ninth inning as New Orleans (38-24) rallied to beat Wichita State (49-20).
Stephen Whalen (9-5) was the winner.
Oklahoma St. 6, Creighton 4
Rebel Ridling hit a three-run homer in Oklahoma State's four-run first inning to help the Cowboys (33-19) end a six-game losing streak.
Oliver Odle (7-4) went the distance for the Oklahoma State, striking out five and giving up four runs on nine hits. Marc Lewis (8-3) took the loss for Creighton (44-15).
Arkansas 9, Albany 0
Logan Forsythe hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning, and Jacob Julius had a two-run double in the third for Arkansas (42-19).
Arkansas starter Duke Welker (7-5) was the winner, and Evan Cox pitched the final three innings to get his second save of the season.
Albany is 29-28.
Round Rock Regional
Texas 8, Brown 2
Kyle Russell hit his 28th home run of the season in the first inning, and Chais Fuller added a two-run homer in the sixth for Texas (45-15).
Texas reliever Joseph Krebs (9-1) entered the game in the fifth inning and had seven strikeouts. He allowed only two hits. Brown dropped to 27-20.
UC Irvine 13, Wake Forest 0
Wes Etheridge (12-4) struck out 10 in eight innings, and Bryan Peterson went 3-for-3 and scored three runs for UC Irvine (41-15-1).
Wake Forest dropped to 33-28.
Columbia, S.C., Regional
Charlotte 6, N.C. State 3
Adam Mills helped Charlotte (48-10) win for the first time in three NCAA tournaments, limiting North Carolina State (37-22) to six hits and two unearned runs in seven innings.
Mills (14-2) struck out five and walked one. He didn't allow an earned run, dropping his national-best ERA to 0.96. Spencer Steedley homered for the 49ers.
South Carolina 9, Wofford 1
Justin Smoak hit two home runs, and Harris Honeycutt (8-5) allowed five hits and struck out seven in seven innings for South Carolina (43-18).
Wofford dropped to 30-32.
TCU 3, Baylor 2
Andrew Walker and Bryan Kervin homered in the seventh inning to lead TCU (47-12).
Walker snapped a 1-1 tie with his 12th home run of the season, a solo shot off Jeff Mandel. One out later, Kervin sent Mandel's 2-1 pitch over the wall in right-center for a two-run lead. Sam Demel (7-1) pitched the final three innings for the win.
Baylor dropped to 34-26.
Rice 5, Prairie View A&M 0
Tyler Henley hit a two-run homer, and Matt Langwell (7-1) pitched seven scoreless innings for Rice (50-12).
Bobby Bramhall pitched two innings of one-hit relief, striking our four of the seven batters he faced. Prairie View (34-24) made six errors.
Florida St. 6, Bethune-Cookman 2
Buster Posey capped a five-run seventh with a two-run homer, and Jason Stidham hit a solo shot in eighth for Florida State (48-11).
Alejandro Jimenez homered for Bethune-Cookman (33-26).
Mississippi St. 6, Stetson 3
Mitch Moreland broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the fourth, and Mississippi State (34-20) broke the game open with a three-run sixth.
Stetson dropped to 41-20.
UC Riverside 10, Nebraska 5
Jaime Pedroza hit a two-run homer to break a 1-1 tie in the third and added a two-run single in the fourth to pace the UC Riverside (38-19).
Carl Uhl had tied the game with a solo shot in the third and added a two-run double in the fourth. James Simmons (11-3) limited Nebraska (30-26) to four runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings.
Arizona St. 5, Monmouth 3
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Ike Davis and Kiel Roling homered and Brian Flores scattered three hits over eight innings to lead Arizona State past Monmouth.
Flores (10-1) allowed two runs, struck out eight and walked two to help the Sun Devils (44-13) advance. Davis' two-run homer broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth.
College Station Regional
Louisiana Lafayette 5, Ohio St. 4
Xavier Alexander's doubled into the left-center gap in the bottom of the ninth to give Louisiana Lafayette (44-15) the victory.
Nolan Gisclair had a two-run homer for the Cajuns. Matt Pilgreen (7-0) was the winner, pitching five scoreless innings. Ohio State dropped to 37-23.
Texas A&M 7, Le Moyne 2
David Newmann (11-1) struck out nine over seven innings, and Texas A&M (45-16) stole eight bases to give the Aggies a Big 12-record 147 steals on the season.
Le Moyne (34-18) hasn't won in the tournament since 1989.
San Diego Regional
CS Fullerton 7, Minnesota 1
Wes Roemer (10-6) threw a seven-hitter, and Evan McArthur and Josh Fellhauer hit home runs in Cal State Fullerton's five-run fourth.
Dan Lyons homered for Minnesota.
Fullerton improved to 34-23, and Minnesota dropped to 40-17.
Fresno State 6, San Diego 2
Tommy Mendonca led off the eighth inning with a tiebreaking home run to lead Fresno State over San Diego.
Tanner Scheppers (7-5) pitched 3 1-3 innings scoreless innings to preserve the win for Fresno State (37-27). Sean Nicol drove in two runs with a double in the fourth for the Toreros (43-17).
Tom Mendonca hit his 10th home run of the season and Fresno State broke open a 4-4 tie in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Bulldogs (37-27) scored three runs in the eighth inning and added another in the ninth as Fresno State outhit San Diego (43-17), 15-6.
