TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- State Rep. Bill Proctor will serve as
Florida State's interim athletic director.
The St. Augustine Republican will replace David Hart Jr. when he
leaves Dec. 31, university president T.K. Wetherell said Friday.
Hart was told this summer his contract would not be renewed
after it expires in January 2009. Hart agreed to leave earlier with
a lump sum of $475,000.
The 74-year-old Proctor sits on a committee that helps determine
state university budgets. Wetherell, a former Florida House
speaker, said Proctor will immediately assume some of the athletic
Proctor will keep his position as chancellor of Flagler College
during his stint at Florida State, where he earned three degrees
including a doctorate in education administration.
"I've known Bill for 40 years. He is a man of high integrity,
his credentials are impeccable," Wetherell said. "He understands
what a student-athlete is all about."
Wetherell expects a new AD will be hired by next summer.
