Wildcats take top spot after first weekend of play
Take a quick look back at last week's games and a first glance at the upcoming games for teams in Baseball America's Top 25.
Baseball America takes a look at how the Top 25 teams fared in the past week:
1. Arizona
Last Week: 2-1.
Overall: 2-1, 0-0 in Pac-10. (0-0 vs. Top 25.)
Weekend Series: 1-0.
Notes: The Wildcats won an intense, competitive road series against a veteran Georgia club despite a lackluster start from ace junior RHP Preston Guilmet (4 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 4 ER) in Friday's loss. Arizona's comeback bid was stopped in its tracks by Georgia closer Joshua Fields, who struck out the side in the ninth and touched 97 mph with his fastball. Senior LHP David Coulon (5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K) was strong Saturday, and sophomore RHP Jason Stoffel (2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R) helped shut down the Georgia offense. Junior OF T.J. Steele's three-run homer highlighted Arizona's four-run eighth to put that game away. Junior RHP Ryan Perry (5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER) worked in the 94-96 range Sunday but got hit, but the Arizona offense bailed him out with nine runs over the seventh and eighth innings. Things got testy in the seventh when junior OF Jon Gaston, who went 5-for-12 with three RBIs on the weekend, was called out at home and ejected for attempting to collide with Georgia catcher Bryce Massanari. Georgia scored four in the ninth to make things interesting before Stoffel came in again and stifled the comeback bid.

Notes: Ole Miss steamrolled an overmatched Minnesota club, outscoring the Golden Gophers 45-10 in three games. Junior RHP Lance Lynn (5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 12 K) was overpowering Friday, striking out the first eight hitters in a row. Junior OF Logan Power (2-for-4, 2B, 4 RBIs) paced the offense. The Rebels rapped out 19 hits in Saturday's blowout, led by junior 3B Cody Overbeck (3-for-4, 2 HR, 4 RBIs). Mississippi already led 11-2 in that one before scoring 10 runs in the fifth. Overbeck went deep again Sunday to cap his big weekend (6-for-12, 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBIs), and five Rebels notched multiple-hit afternoons in support of sophomore LHP Nathan Baker (5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K).

Weekend Series: 0-0-1.
Notes: After Friday's game was postponed by rain, the Bruins split a doubleheader Saturday but saw Sunday's finale canceled by more bad weather. Oklahoma ace Stephen Porlier missed the series with an injury, and the Bruins took an early 2-0 lead on fill-in Jeremy Erben over the first two innings of the first game. Sophomore LHP Gavin Brooks (5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 6 K) made the lead stand up for five innings despite spotty control, but the Sooners scored four in the eighth off sophomore RHP Charles Brewer (2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R) to tie the score at five, setting the stage for sophomore OF Gabe Cohen's two-run walk-off homer. UCLA's bats went cold in the second game, wasting a solid start by junior LHP Tim Murphy (6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER) and four scoreless innings of relief from junior LHP Brendan Lafferty. The Sooners manufactured the winning run in the 12th against freshman RHP Dan Klein.

Notes: The Tar Heels had to work hard to sweep a road series at Florida Atlantic. The weekend started out easily enough, as sophomore RHP Alex White (5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) turned in a strong performance Friday and sophomore OF Dustin Ackley and senior OF Seth Williams combined to go 7-for-7 with four home runs and six RBIs. But the Owls jumped on junior RHP Adam Warren (1.1 IP, 7 H, 8 ER) on Saturday and UNC needed two runs in the eighth to hold off an FAU rally in the ninth. Williams (3-for-4, HR, 4 RBIs) and Ackley (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBIs) were joined by sophomore 2B Kyle Seager (4-for-4, 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBIs) and senior 3B Chad Flack (2-for-6, HR, 4 RBIs) in UNC's hit parade in that one. Ackley went 3-for-5 with another homer Sunday (his sixth in UNC's past seven games dating to the 2007 CWS) and even drew an intentional walk with the bases empty in the sixth, but the Tar Heels needed home runs by junior C Tim Federowicz and sophomore OF Tim Fedroff as part of a four-run ninth to earn the comeback victory.

The Tigers scored four runs in the first inning Saturday against Michigan State and padded the lead with six more in the fifth. Senior DH Jacob Priday (2-for-4, 3 RBIs) and sophomore 3B/2B Greg Folgia (2-for-5, 3B, 3 RBIs) paced the offense in that one. Sophomore RHP Kyle Gibson (6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 10 K) was very strong in Sunday's win against host Stetson, and Priday added a homer and a double in support.

Senior LHP Josh Satow (5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R) and three relievers combined to hold Miami (Ohio) to two hits in a shutout Friday. In Saturday's laugher against Vandy, junior 3B Brett Wallace homered twice and drove in seven out of the leadoff spot; sophomore OF Jason Kipnis added a triple, homer and three RBIs; and junior 1B Ike Davis went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, making a winner out of sophomore RHP Mike Leake (6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER). Freshman RHP Seth Blair (4 IP, 3 H, 0 R), junior RHP Jason Franzblau (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R) and senior RHP Tommy Rafferty (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R) combined to shut out Oregon State on Sunday, and Wallace provided two more hits including a leadoff homer to key a seven-run first inning. Sophomore RHP Jason Jarvis was ruled academically eligible "for the time being," according to reports, and appeared in two games, once pitching and twice hitting (going 1-for-2).

Junior 3B Pedro Alvarez missed the final two games of the series with a wrist injury; his status will be determined this week.

Junior RHP/DH Zach Putnam did not pitch because of shoulder tenderness, and junior LHP Mike Wilson (4 IP, 2 H, 4 ER, 6 BB, 4 K) was erratic in his stead Friday, but R-freshman RHP Matt Gerbe and freshman RHP Tyler Burgoon combined for five innings of hitless, shutout relief, and Putnam went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as part of a 15-hit attack. Junior SS Reese Havens (5-for-6, HR, 5 RBIs, 4 R) went bonkers in the first game, and senior DH Phil Disher added a pair of homers and five RBIs as the Gamecocks built a 16-0 lead through three innings. South Carolina's defense didn't do sophomore RHP Blake Cooper (3 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 ER) any favors in the nightcap, committing four errors as the Pirates rolled. Senior RHP Curtis Johnson (6.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER) was strong in relief of junior LHP Craig Thomas (4 IP, 4 ER) Sunday, and sophomore C Kyle Enders delivered a game-winning RBI single in the 11th.

Notes: The Beavers' second title defense got off to a rocky start, as they were outscored 19-1 in their two games against ranked teams in the DeMarini Invitational. Vanderbilt jumped on senior RHP Mike Stutes (4 IP, 7H, 4 ER) early in Friday's game, and OSU managed just five hits against Commodores pitching. Overall: 3-0, 0-0 in Big 12 (0-0 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 1-0.
Notes: Baylor won a trio of one-run games against Purdue, relying on strong pitching in two of them and big bats in another. Sophomore RHP Kendal Volz (8 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 10 K) came out on top in a fine pitchers' duel against Purdue ace Matt Bischoff on Friday, and freshman 2B Lancis Ware (starting for an injured Raynor Campbell) hit a two-run homer in the eighth to make Volz a winner. Redshirt freshman RHP Shawn Tolleson (2.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) struggled in his collegiate debut Saturday, but sophomore 3B Shaver Hansen (3-for-5, grand slam) led a 14-hit attack and the Bears manufactured the game-winning run in the 11th. Sophomore RHP Ryan Berry (7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K) turned in a fine performance Friday, but the Owls couldn't muster a run of support and the Dirtbags pushed across the winning run against senior RHP Bryan Price in the 10th. Senior LHP Cole St.Clair (4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER) was solid in a planned four-inning start Saturday, but the Owls couldn't manage more than two runs despite tallying nine hits. Junior LHP Brian Matusz (4.2 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 6 K) was hammered in Friday's loss, and the Toreros mustered just five hits over eight innings against SDSU ace Stephen Strasburg. Junior LHP/OF Josh Romanski (5 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) didn't fare much better than Matusz on the mound in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, but he helped bail himself out with his bat, going 4-for-5 with two homers and seven RBIs out of the cleanup spot. Senior RHP Matt Couch (3.2 IP, 10 H, 10 R, 9 ER) took the worst beating of all in the nightcap, when the Toreros managed just three hits.

Notes: Before Sunday's series finale was postponed to Monday by rain, the Aztecs not only won two of three games against their ranked crosstown rival, but they did it by bludgeoning a pitching staff widely regarded as one of the nation's best. Friday's Marquee Mound Matchup proved lopsided, as sophomore RHP Stephen Strasburg (8 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) cruised and SDSU pounded out 16 hits against USD ace Brian Matusz and three relievers. Senior SS Troy Hanzawa (3-for-6, 2 R, 2 RBIs) and junior 3B Nick Romero (3-for-4, HR, 4 RBIs) led the onslaught. Even in a loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Aztecs put up eight runs against All-American lefty Josh Romanski, led by senior 2B Garett Green (4-for-5, 2 HR, 3 RBIs, 4 R). Hanzawa (3-for-6, 2B, 3 RBIs) and Green (3-for-4, 2B, 3 RBIs) were among seven Aztecs to record multiple-hit games in the nightcap, making a winner of sophomore LHP Nate Solow (5.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 6 K).

Notes: The Titans won a road series against Mountain West Conference favorite Texas Christian. Fullerton rapped out 18 hits Friday in support of senior RHP Jeff Kaplan (5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER), with newcomer junior OF Erik Komatsu (3-for-5, 2B, 3B, HR, 5 RBIs) and sophomore OF Josh Fellhauer (4-for-6, 2B, 2 RBIs) leading the barrage. Komatsu's two-run homer in the sixth was all the offense the Titans could muster Saturday, when three of the four runs allowed by junior RHP Cory Arbiso were unearned. Fullerton broke a 4-4 tie Sunday with a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth, and junior RHP Brian Wilson threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Fellhauer (3-for-5, HR, RBIs) and freshman 2B Gary Brown (2-for-5, 2 RBIs, 2 SB) were the offensive catalysts in the finale.

Notes: The Bulldogs dropped the first two games of a four-game set against UC Davis but bounced back to salvage a split. Junior LHP Justin Wilson (6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) was a tough-luck loser in the opener, as an error by senior 1B Ryan Overland opened the door to Davis' three-run fifth inning. Fresno's bats remained cold in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, as senior RHP Clayton Allison (7 IP, 3 ER) pitched well but took the loss. Junior RHP Tanner Scheppers (7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K) was masterful in the nightcap, and the Bulldogs erupted for 15 hits to back him up. Miller came back to fire three innings of one-run ball in Sunday's finale before handing off to senior RHP Brandon Burke (5.2 IP, 2 ER), and the pair made Fresno's four-run first inning stand up.

Notes: The Ragin' Cajuns won their first two but dropped their final two at the UTSA Baseball Classic. Junior RHP Danny Farquhar (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 9 K) shut down Army on Friday, and senior OF Josh Logan (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 SB) sparked the offense. Senior LHP Hunter Moody (6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K) narrowly outdid Farquhar in ULL's first game Saturday, and junior 3B Matt Hicks provided all the offense he would need with two hits and a homer. Hicks homered again in a loss to Oral Roberts and junior DH Scott Hawkins added four hits, but ORU tagged senior LHP Brent Solich with six runs over the fifth and sixth innings. UTSA scored all five of its runs in the fourth off senior RHP Buddy Glass on Sunday, and the Cajuns' bats could not answer.

Notes: The Aggies had to win Sunday's finale to salvage a split of a four-game series against a vastly less-talented Northern Colorado team. Senior LHP Kirkland Rivers (5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 7 K) was hittable Friday, but junior SS Jose Duran's two-run single highlighted a four-run TAMU sixth that broke a 5-5 tie. The Lumberjacks got to junior RHP Kyle Thebeau and sophomore RHP Travis Starling for a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning of the first game Saturday, then broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the seventh in the nightcap, spoiling a good debut by freshman RHP Barret Loux (5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K). On Sunday it was A&M's turn to break a 2-2 tie with a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

Notes: After being obliterated in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, ECU rebounded with a blowout win of its own in the nightcap before dropping an extra-innings affair Sunday. Senior RHP T.J. Hose (1.1 IP, 9 H, 11 R, 9 ER) was pounded in the opener, and three Pirates relievers provided little relief, combining to give up 11 more runs. Freshman RHP Seth Maness (4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER) held South Carolina's bats in check in the second game before handing off to junior RHP Daniel Holder (4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER), and senior OF Jamie Ray's three-run triple (he also scored on the play after a throwing error) keyed a five-run third inning that broke the game open. Junior RHP/3B Justin Bristow (5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K) was solid in his ECU debut on the mound Sunday, and junior 3B Drew Scheiber (3-for-4, 3 RBIs) doubled and scored in the ninth to force extras, but the Gamecocks got to senior LHP Josh Ruhlman in the 11th.

Notes: Rain and bad field conditions kept the Monarchs from playing Friday or Saturday, and they split Sunday's doubleheader. ODU committed three errors in the opener behind junior RHP Dan Hudson (5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 ER) and three relievers, who combined to give up four runs after Hudson left. Junior RHP Anthony Shawler (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 10 K) was dominant in the second game, though Rutgers mounted a comeback bid against junior RHP Dexter Carter (0.1 IP, 1 H, 4 ER). Eight Monarchs recorded hits in that one, and ODU scored four runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.
