Sweep of Georgia Tech helps Canes keep top spot

Baseball America takes a look at how the Top 25 teams fared in the past week:

1. Miami
Last Week: 4-1.
Overall: 30-3, 15-1 in ACC. (0-0 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 8-0.
Notes: After Friday's series opener was postponed until Saturday by the tragic death of Georgia Tech left-hander Michael Hutts, the Hurricanes swept the somber Yellow Jackets. Miami pounded out 47 hits in three games, with much of the damage coming from the dynamic duo atop the lineup of junior CF Blake Tekotte (9-for-15, 7 R, 9 RBI, 3B, 3 HR, 2 SB) and junior 2B Jemile Weeks (8-for-13, 5 R, 4 RBI, 2B, SB). Sophomore LHP Eric Erickson remained sidelined, but the Canes got solid starts from freshman LHP Nick Hernandez (6 IP, 3 ER), senior RHP Enrique Garcia (7 IP, 3 ER), and sophomore RHP David Gutierrez (6 IP, 3 ER). Miami and Florida State enter next weekend's showdown with a combined 32-2 conference record.

2. Arizona State
Last Week: 2-1.
Overall: 30-4, 6-3 in Pac-10. (7-2 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 4-1.
Notes: The Sun Devils rebounded from their first series loss of the season by going back on the road and taking two of three from Washington State. Junior 3B Brett Wallace (4-for-7, 2 R, 4 RBI, SB) paced a 16-hit attack Friday in support of senior LHP Josh Satow (6 IP, 3 ER). Junior CF Mike Jones made two errors on the same play in the seventh inning Saturday, opening the floodgates to a four-run inning that broke a 4-4 tie and gave sophomore RHP Mike Leake (6.1, 8 H, 8 R, 3 ER) his first loss of the year. Junior RHP Stephen Sauer was chased in WSU's three-run first inning Sunday, but junior 1B/LHP Ike Davis went 4-for-6 with a pair of homers (his 13th and 14th of the year), a double and seven RBIs in the back-and-forth affair. (He hit 17 homers total in his first two seasons.) He also allowed just one run in 2.2 IP to pick up the win in relief.

3. Florida State
Last Week: 3-0.
Overall: 31-3, 17-1 in ACC (4-0 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 8-0.
Notes: The Seminoles have now swept seven of their eight weekend series after dispatching Boston College in Chestnut Hill. Freshman CF Tyler Holt had a monstrous weekend from the leadoff spot, going 5-for-5 on Friday and recording two hits in each game of Saturday's doubleheader (Sunday's game was moved up by the threat of bad weather). Junior C Buster Posey (6-for-10, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 2B, HR) had another strong weekend; his 1.433 OPS ranks third in Division I, according to boydsworld.com. Sophomore LHP Matt Fairel (6 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 5 ER) wasn't his best Friday but still improved to 8-0, keeping pace with Missouri's Aaron Crow atop the national leaderboard. Senior OF Jack Rye's solo homer in the eighth in Game Two broke a 3-3 tie and made freshman RHP Geoff Parker (8 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) a winner. Junior RHP Elih Villanueva (6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K) improved to 4-0 in the finale.

4. North Carolina
Last Week: 4-1.
Overall: 29-7, 13-4 in ACC. (0-0 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 6-0-1.
Notes: The Tar Heels swept their third weekend series of the year and won a series at Clemson (which has lost nine straight to fall to 18-17, 6-12) for the first time ever. UNC, which has not dropped an ACC series in its last nine chances, claimed its first series victory over the Tigers since 2000 in Chapel Hill. Friday's game was suspended by rain in the seventh inning, but not before sophomore 1B Dustin Ackley's three-run homer in the sixth broke open a 2-0 game. When play resumed Saturday, the Tar Heels easily closed out the win for sophomore RHP Alex White (5.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 6 K). In Game Two on Saturday, sophomore 2B Kyle Seager homered twice and drove in a career-high four runs, as UNC overcame three errors and got five scoreless innings from its bullpen. Seager had three more hits Sunday and drove in three more to raise his ACC-leading RBIs total to 48, and the Tar Heels rapped out 18 hits to overcome a rough outing by freshman RHP Matt Harvey (1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K).

5. UC Irvine

Weekend Series: 5-1.
Notes: The Anteaters played back-to-back series against Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State and emerged with a 3-3 record after winning two of three at Blair Field. Junior RHP Scott Gorgen (6.1 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 5 K) wasn't his best Friday, but UCI scored six runs over the final two innings to break open a 4-3 game. Sophomore RHP Bryce Stowell (6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 6 BB, 9 K) carried a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning Saturday before LBSU scored five times in the frame against him and three relievers. Sophomore LHP Daniel Bibona (6.2 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) improved to 5-1 in Sunday's win.

6. Missouri

Notes: The Tigers have won seven of their last nine games against Texas after throttling the Longhorns in the first two games this weekend. Missouri batted .500 (43-for-86) as a team on Friday and Saturday while outscoring the Horns 44-14. In the opener, senior OF Jacob Priday went 5-for-5 with a Big 12-record four home runs and nine RBIs. Junior RHP Aaron Crow saw his 42.2-inning scoreless streak end with a thud in Texas' five-run first inning, but he improved to 8-0 despite allowing nine earned runs on nine hits over five innings. His ERA jumped from 0.69 to 2.05. Priday was one of five Tigers to record multiple hits Saturday in support of sophomore RHP Kyle Gibson (7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K). Junior RHP Ian Berger (5 IP, 8 H, 7 ER) saw his ERA balloon from 0.81 to 1.99 in Sunday's loss.

Notes: After Friday's game was pushed back to Saturday by rain, the Shockers dropped the series opener to Creighton and then swept Sunday's doubleheader. Senior LHP Rob Musgrave (7.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) suffered his first loss of the year Saturday, as Creighton scored four times in the eighth to break open a 3-3 game. The Shockers returned the favor in the second game of Sunday's twin bill, breaking a 2-2 tie with an unearned run in the eighth to help junior LHP Anthony Capra (7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K) improve to 6-0, 1.75. In the middle game, senior C Tyler Weber (2-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI) paced WSU's 10-hit attack in support of junior RHP Aaron Shafer (8 IP, 6 H, 3 ER).

Notes: Cal allowed 39 runs in three games and lost its first series of the year. Junior RHP Tyson Ross (4 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) was hammered Friday and fell to 5-1, 3.25 on the year. Junior LHP Craig Bennigson (3 IP, 7 H, 6 ER) had another rough outing Saturday and has failed to last five innings in each of his last three starts. The Trojans led 7-1 after two innings and 11-5 after four on Sunday, but junior 1B David Cooper (4-for-6, 2 R, 2 RBI) led Cal's spirited comeback and capped it off with a two-run single in the ninth to break an 11-11 tie.

Notes: Nebraska dropped its second road series of the year and is 2-2 in series away from Lincoln. Senior RHP Johnny Dorn (8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) was out-dueled by Oklahoma State ace Andrew Oliver (9 IP, 3 H, 0 R) on Friday. The Cornhuskers were out-hit 24-6 on Saturday, as senior RHP Thad Weber (3.1 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 6 ER) saw his ERA rise from 3.06 to 3.93. Nebraska's bats woke up Sunday, producing 14 runs on 13 hits, and senior RHP Dan Jennings (4 IP, 1 H, 0 R) was stellar in relief of junior RHP Aaron Pribanic (4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 1 K).

10. Stanford

Weekend Series: 7-0.
Notes: The Cardinal, the ultimate weekend warriors, went on the road and won their 10th consecutive series. So far in 2008, they're 15-6 on weekends and 2-5-1 in midweek action. Junior 2B Cord Phelps and junior CF Sean Ratliff each belted a three-run homer in Friday's see-saw affair, but the Beavers scored three runs over the seventh and eighth innings to tie it and won it with another run in the 10th. Phelps (3-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) singled home the go-ahead run in the ninth Saturday in support of senior RHP Erik Davis (9 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 9 K), who threw his third straight complete game to improve to 5-1. Ratliff and freshman PH Ben Clowe delivered back-to-back homers in the ninth Sunday in support of sophomore RHP Jeffrey Inman (6.1 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER).

Notes: Rice ran its winning streak to seven with a three-game sweep of UAB, but it wasn't easy. On Friday, junior 2B Jess Buenger (4-for-5, 3 R, 3 RBI, HR) helped Rice build an 11-1 lead through four innings for sophomore RHP Ryan Berry (6 IP, 9 H, 5 ER), but UAB battled back and tied the score with four against freshman LHP Matt Evers in the top of the eighth before freshman OF Chad Mozingo delivered a game-winning two-run single in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore 3B Diego Seastrunk went 6-for-9 over the next two games and delivered a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning Sunday after the Blazers scored three in the ninth against senior LHP Cole St.Clair.

Notes: The Toreros have quietly gotten hot, sweeping a three-game set at Portland to run their winning streak to eight games. Junior LHP Brian Matusz (7 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 9 K) improved to 7-1, 1.99 on Friday, as all nine USD starters posted hits and six recorded multiple hits. Junior LHP/OF Josh Romanski (8 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) settled down after Portland's four-run second inning Saturday, improving to 6-0, 4.37. Freshman RHP Kyle Blair (6 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 5 BB, 5 K) ran into trouble in Portland's seven-run seventh Sunday, but by that point the Toreros had already scored 13 runs, led by sophomore OF James Meador (4-for-6, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and freshman 3B Victor Sanchez (3-for-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI).

Weekend Series: 6-2.
Notes: Georgia swept its second straight SEC series against a ranked opponent to seize control of the conference. The Bulldogs lead the Eastern Division by three games over Florida and South Carolina. Junior RHP Trevor Holder (7 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 9 K) bested Chris Rusin in Friday's marquee mound matchup, as junior SS Gordon Beckham doubled home the tying run in the seventh and scored the winning run two batters later. The top five hitters in Georgia's lineup accounted for 10 of the team's 14 hits Saturday in support of junior RHP Stephen Dodson (7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER), who protected an early 9-0 lead to improve to 5-0. Beckham hit his nation-leading 16th homer on Sunday, a two-run shot in the fifth that cut Kentucky's lead to 4-3. The Dawgs scored twice more in the seventh to take the lead for good, and their bullpen held Kentucky hitless and scoreless over the final four frames.

Notes: After being swept on the road by Georgia last weekend, the Gamecocks rebounded with a sweep of their own at Auburn. The Tigers scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth Friday to erase a 6-3 deficit, but South Carolina pushed across a run in the ninth to escape with the win. On Saturday it was South Carolina's turn to come from behind, scoring all eight of its runs over the final five innings to make a winner out of junior LHP Will Atwood (7 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 6 K). Sunday brought more late-inning fireworks, as the Gamecocks scored five runs over the final three innings and held on despite a three-run Auburn outburst in the bottom of the ninth.

15. Cal State Fullerton

Notes: The Titans have won four consecutive weekend series, but they had to work to hold off Cal State Northridge. Freshman SS Christian Colon (4-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) led an 18-hit barrage Friday in support of senior RHP Jeff Kaplan (9 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 11 K), who improved to 5-1, 4.80. The Titans mustered just two runs Saturday behind freshman RHP Daniel Renken (7 IP, 7 H, 4 ER). Colon (4-for-5, 2B, 4 R, 3 RBI) and junior OF Erik Komatsu (4-for-5, 2 R, 4 RBI) helped Fullerton build a 14-2 lead through four innings Sunday, but the Matadors, led by catcher Chris Hannick, who belted three homers and drove in nine, mounted a furious comeback attempt against junior RHP Cory Arbiso (5 IP, 11 H, 8 ER) and the CSF bullpen. Senior RHP Adam Jorgenson entered with runners on second and third and two outs in the ninth inning and induced a game-ending groundout.

16. Ole Miss

Notes: Ole Miss ran its winning streak to eight games before dropping Sunday's series finale against LSU. Junior C Brett Basham's solo homer in the eighth Friday broke a 1-1 tie and helped junior RHP Lance Lynn (8 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 12 K) improved to 5-0, 3.21 with 65-13 K-BB in 48 IP. Freshman LHP Drew Pomeranz (8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) was nearly as dominant Saturday, improving to 3-1, 1.89 with 46-12 K-BB in 38 IP. The Rebels managed just two runs on three hits Sunday, as junior RHP Cody Satterwhite (5.1 IP, 9 H, 4 ER) fell to 3-2, 4.38.

Notes: Vandy has won five straight since being swept at Mississippi. A second straight weekend trip to the Magnolia State went much better, as the Commodores scored 31 runs over the first two games in Starkville and won a one-run game in Sunday's finale. Vandy got big weekends from senior CF David Macias (8-for-15, 7 R, 3 RBI, 2B, HR) and junior 3B Pedro Alvarez (8-for-15, 8 R, 2 RBI, 2B, HR). Vanderbilt's other preseason All-Americans -- junior SS Ryan Flaherty (5-for-10, 4 R, 7 RBI, 2 HR) and senior OF Dominic de la Osa (3-7, 2 R, 5 RBI, 2 2B, 4 SB) -- shined brightly in the first two games. Redshirt freshman RHP Caleb Cotham (7 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 7 K) was strong in Saturday's blowout, and junior RHP Nick Christiani (7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 10 K) came up big in Sunday's more closely contested affair.

Notes: Oklahoma State won its second straight series against a conference foe ranked in the top six. Sophomore LHP Andrew Oliver (9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K) was magnificent in a classic pitcher's duel against Nebraska's Johnny Dorn on Friday. Sophomore LHP Tyler Lyons (9 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) threw his second straight complete game Saturday and has pitched at least into the eighth in each of his last five starts. All nine OSU starters recorded multiple-hit games in support of Lyons. Sophomore RHP Tyler Blandford (2.1 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 5 BB) struggled with his control in Sunday's loss.

19. Texas A&M

Notes: The Aggies have won 13 in a row, including sweeps over Kansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma. After Texas A&M coughed up a 6-2 lead Friday, sophomore SS Brodie Greene led off the bottom of the ninth with a pinch-hit single and scored the winning run on junior SS Jose Duran's RBI single. Duran went 2-for-5 with three RBIs Saturday in support of freshman RHP Barret Loux (7.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K), who improved to 2-1, 5.00. Duran (3-for-5, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) paced a 16-hit attack in Sunday's run-rule-shortened game, as sophomore RHP Clayton Ehlert (7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K) improved to 5-2, 3.00.

20. Texas

Notes: The Longhorns dropped two of three at Missouri and have lost seven of their last nine games against the Tigers. Texas jumped out to an 8-0 lead against Aaron Crow heading into the bottom of the second Friday, but Missouri's Jacob Priday slugged four homers and the Tigers posted 31 runs against seven Texas pitchers. Freshman RHP Brandon Workman (3 IP, 7 H, 6 ER) fared little better in Saturday's rout. Junior OF Kyle Russell blasted two homers Friday and two more Sunday to give him seven on the year. Freshman RHP Chance Ruffin (5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 4 K) stopped the bleeding Sunday, and Texas supported him with an 11-hit attack. Texas' team ERA ballooned to 5.01 after the series.

Notes: The Wolverines entered the weekend with just a one-game lead over Illinois in the Big Ten standings, but they left Champagne with a four-game sweep. Freshman LHP Scott Alexander (4.1 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 5 ER) struggled in Saturday's seesaw affair, but the Waves scored three times in the bottom of the ninth, capped by sophomore C Trent Diedrich's walk-off RBI single, his fourth RBI of the game. Junior OF Eric Thames went 8-for-9 with a homer and five RBIs over the final two games of the series to raise his overall line to .408/.510/.816 with 10 homers and 47 RBIs.

Kemp homered again Saturday and Sunday, giving him a team-high 12 homers and 43 RBIs on the year to go along with a .366 batting average. Freshman RHP Seth Maness (8 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) pitched well in a no-decision Saturday before the Pirates got the winning run on a pinch-hit RBI double by Jamie Ray in the bottom of the ninth. Junior RHP Justin Bristow (6.2 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) got a no-decision Friday, but ECU won on Kemp's walk-off two-run homer, capping a three-run ninth.

Junior RHP Scott Green (2 IP, 8 H, 9 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) was blasted on Saturday, although the Wildcats didn't help him by making three errors in the first two frames. The UK bullpen relinquished a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning Sunday. One of the Kentucky's few bright spots on the weekend was the hot bat of senior OF Sawyer Carroll (6-for-11, 2B, 2 HR, 3 R, 5 RBI), who is now hitting .456/.542/.816 with 10 homers and 48 RBIs on the year.
