Miami wins ACC title, but loses top spot to UNC after weekend series

Baseball America takes a look at how the Top 25 teams fared in the past week:

1. North Carolina
Last Week: 3-0.
Overall: 45-10, 22-7 in ACC. (4-2 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 10-0-1.
Notes: Though Miami clinched the ACC's regular-season title with Thursday's win, the Tar Heels won the series to go undefeated in ACC weekend series for the first time since the league went to its current three-game format in 1990. UNC also matched school records with 45 regular-season wins (for the third year in a row) and 22 conference wins. Sophomore OF Tim Fedroff (6-for-14, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 3 R) led the UNC offense on the weekend, and sophomore 2B Kyle Seager set a school record with his ACC-leading 26th double of the season Sunday.

2. Arizona State
Last Week: 4-0.
Overall: 44-9, 15-6 in Pac-10. (12-3 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 9-2.
Notes: Arizona State swept Washington to stretch its winning streak to seven games. The Sun Devils have scored 11 or more runs in five straight. Junior 1B Ike Davis returned to the lineup as a DH and went 5-for-13 with four runs and three doubles on the weekend. The Sun Devils got strong starts from sophomore RHP Mike Leake (8 IP, 5 H, 1 ER), senior LHP Josh Satow (6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER) and freshman RHP Seth Blair (5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER). Junior 3B Brett Wallace mashed his second career grand slam and team-leading 19th homer of the year in Sunday's win.

3. Miami
Last Week: 2-2.
Overall: 43-8, 23-5 in ACC. (3-3 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 12-1.
Notes: The Hurricanes clinched the ACC's regular-season title with Thursday's win, but their comeback attempts the next two days fell short, and they dropped their first series of the year. Junior 1B Yonder Alonso hit his second career grand slam Thursday in support of freshman LHP Chris Hernandez (7.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K), who issued no walks for the third straight start.

4. Florida State
Last Week: 3-1.
Overall: 46-9, 24-6 in ACC (8-5 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 11-2.
Notes: Florida State won its eighth conference series of the year and tied last year's team for its best finish in league play. Junior C/RHP Buster Posey tripled and scored the game's only run in the eighth inning Friday and then worked a perfect ninth to close the game for junior RHP Elih Villanueva (7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K). Senior RHP Ryan Strauss (6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K) was very strong Saturday in his first start in more than a month.

5. Rice
Last Week: 3-0.
Overall: 42-11, 21-3 in CUSA (11-3 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 8-2.
Notes: The Owls earned a road sweep at Tulane and have won 17 of their last 18 conference games and 22 of 23 overall heading into the CUSA tournament, where they'll be the No. 1 seed for the third straight year. Sophomore RHP Ryan Berry (8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K) bested Tulane ace Shooter Hunt on Thursday, and sophomore RHP Mike Ojala (6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K) turned in a strong start in the second game of Friday's doubleheader.

6. Cal State Fullerton
Last Week: 3-0.
Overall: 35-17, 15-6 in Big West (8-5 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 11-2.
Notes: The Titans won their ninth consecutive weekend series, a nonconference set against San Diego State, and they lead the Big West by a game over Long Beach State heading into next weekend's showdown at Blair Field. Fullerton hung four runs on Aztecs' ace Stephen Strasburg over six innings Thursday, with half the damage coming on junior 1B Jared Clark's two-run homer in the first. Senior RHP Jeff Kaplan (6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 7 K) won his seventh straight decision in that one.

7. Oklahoma State
Last Week: 3-1.
Overall: 40-15, 18-9 in Big 12 (11-7 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 9-2.
Notes: The Cowboys won their sixth straight conference series but finished in second place in the Big 12 after dropping Sunday's finale against rival Oklahoma. Sophomore LHPs Andrew Oliver (8 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) and Tyler Lyons (9 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K) pitched very well in OSU's two victories.

8. Georgia
Last Week: 2-2.
Overall: 35-19-1, 20-9-1 in SEC. (11-6 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 9-4.
Notes: The Bulldogs had already wrapped up the top seed in next week's SEC tournament by taking two of three last weekend at Vanderbilt, but their national seed aspirations took a hit this weekend, as they lost two of three at home to Alabama. Junior RHP Trevor Holder (1.2 IP, 7 H, 6 ER) was hit hard in the first game of Friday's doubleheader, and senior RHP Joshua Fields (1 IP, 3 ER) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs in the ninth after the Bulldogs scored four in the bottom of the eighth to tie it. Junior SS Gordon Beckham hit his 23rd homer of the year in the middle game, but he now trails College of Charleston's Michael Harrington by three homers for the national lead.

9. Missouri
Last Week: 3-0.
Overall: 37-17, 16-11 in Big 12. (9-5 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 9-3.
Notes: The Tigers finished the regular season in fourth place in the Big 12 after sweeping Nebraska at home. Missouri has won five of its last six weekend series. Junior RHP Aaron Crow (8.1 IP, 4 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8 K) improved to 12-0, 2.66 in Friday's win. In preparation for the Big 12 tournament, the Tigers used usual weekend starters sophomore RHP Kyle Gibson (3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K) and junior LHP Rick Zagone (2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER) in relief on Sunday.

10. LSU
Last Week: 4-0.
Overall: 39-16, 18-11 in SEC (8-6-1 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 8-4.
Notes: By sweeping a three-game series at Auburn, LSU won the SEC's Western Division and stretched its winning streak to 16 games, longest in the nation and third-longest in school history. LSU's 12-game conference winning streak is the longest in school history. The Tigers pounded out 48 hits in three games and erased a 7-5 deficit with five runs in the seventh inning Sunday. LSU will open the conference tournament against South Carolina on Wednesday.

11. San Diego

Notes: The Toreros were off all week but still claimed the WCC's regular-season championship outright when Pepperdine lost Friday at Santa Clara. USD will host the Waves for the best-of-three WCC championship series next weekend.

12. Nebraska
Last Week: 1-3.
Overall: 39-12-1, 17-9-1 in Big 12 (6-7 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 10-3.
Notes: The Cornhuskers were swept at Missouri to fall to 10-9 in road games this year (compared to 28-3-1 at home). Nebraska finishes the Big 12 season in third place. Three Nebraska relievers gave up seven runs in relief of senior RHP Johnny Dorn (6.2 IP, 1 ER) on Friday, but Nebraska's starters failed to get out of the second inning Saturday and Sunday.

13. Texas A&M

Notes: The Aggies have lost six in a row but still backed into the Big 12's regular-season title thanks to Missouri's sweep of Nebraska and Oklahoma's win over Oklahoma State in Sunday's finale. Freshman LHP Brooks Raley (8 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) suffered his first career loss Friday.

14. UC Irvine

Notes: The Anteaters won a hard-fought conference road series at UC Davis, their fourth straight weekend series victory. UCI was out-hit 25-13 over the final two games of the series but still found a way to win both games. Junior RHP Scott Gorgen (6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) was solid in a no-decision Friday.

15. California

Notes: The Bears were off for exams and are now tied with UCLA for third place in the Pac-10 heading into next weekend's three-game series against the Bruins in Berkeley.

16. Stanford
Last Week: 2-1.
Overall: 31-19-1, 12-8 in Pac-10 (9-5-1 vs. Top 25).

Notes: Stanford dropped its first game against Arizona on Saturday but won in extra innings Sunday to keep its Pac-10 title hopes alive. The rubber game against the Wildcats is Monday. Junior RHP/3B Austin Yount (1.1 IP, 8 H, 8 ER) was lit up in Saturday's opener, and senior RHP Erik Davis (6 IP, 9 H, 5 ER) was hittable Sunday, but freshman RHP Drew Storen (5 IP, 2 H, 0 R) picked up the win in relief, as junior C Jason Castro's two-run double highlighted Stanford's three-run 11th.

17. Michigan

Notes: The Wolverines took three of four from Northwestern and won the Big Ten by five games over Purdue. Michigan will host the conference tournament next weekend. Junior RHP/DH Zach Putnam returned from a viral infection to homer twice in Thursday's win and improve to 7-0 with five innings of one-run ball in the first game of Friday's doubleheader. Senior C/1B Nate Recknagel homered twice Tuesday against Notre Dame to break the school's single-season home run record, then extended his record with his 23rd on Friday.

Notes: St. John's won two of three at Villanova to win its second straight Big East regular-season title by one game over streaking Cincinnati. The Red Storm tied school records with 41 wins and 20 conference wins. The Johnnies pounded out 17 hits Thursday in support of junior LHP Scott Barnes (5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 4 K).

19. Kentucky
Last Week: 3-1.
Overall: 41-15, 16-14 in SEC (3-6 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 8-4.
Notes: Kentucky won its second straight weekend series to finish the regular season as the SEC's lone 40-win team. The Wildcats earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament and will open against fifth-seeded Alabama. Kentucky hung eight runs on Ole Miss righty Lance Lynn through 3.1 innings Thursday, with senior OF Sawyer Carroll (4-for-5, 2 R, 6 RBI, 2 2B, HR) leading the onslaught. Carroll homered again Friday, his 16th of the year.

Notes: NC State dropped two out of three at Florida State to finish fourth in the ACC's regular-season standings. The Wolfpack rapped out 14 hits Thursday in support of junior LHP Eric Surkamp (5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K), then mustered just three hits Friday in support of junior RHP Clayton Shunick (6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 10 K).

21. Coastal Carolina

Notes: The Chanticleers cruised to a pair of wins against Radford to win the Big South regular-season title outright, though Sunday's series finale was washed out. Junior 1B/RHP David Anderson (9-for-11, 5 R, 5 RBI, 2 2B, 2 HR) had another monstrous weekend and is 17-for-21 with seven homers and 14 RBIs in his last four games. Junior OF David Sappelt homered three times Saturday to help coach Gary Gilmore pick up his 500th win at Coastal.

22. TCU
Last Week: 5-0.
Overall: 40-16, 19-5 in MWC (2-3 vs. Top 25).

Notes: TCU entered the weekend tied with New Mexico atop the Mountain West, but the Horned Frogs went to Albuquerque and swept three games to win the regular-season title and stretch their winning streak to 10 games. TCU's offense was led all weekend by unrelated senior OF Steve Ellington (8-for-14, 6 R, 2B) and junior OF Chris Ellington (9-for-16, 4 R, 9 RBI, 2 2B, HR).

23. Wichita State

Notes: After losing their sixth straight midweek game Tuesday against Oral Roberts, the Shockers rebounded to sweep Bradley and win their 19th Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title, by one game over Missouri State. Sophomore SS Dusty Coleman hit for the cycle and drove in five in the middle game of the series. He became the first Shocker to hit for the cycle since Doug Mirabelli -- yes, that Doug Mirabelli -- in 1992.

24. Texas

Notes: The Longhorns swept Texas A&M to finish fifth in the Big 12. Texas has won three straight weekend series since being swept by Oklahoma State. The 'Horns got two home runs on the weekend from junior OF Kyle Russell, who now has 15 on the year, but more importantly they got three strong starts from freshman RHP Chance Ruffin (7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), junior LHP Austin Wood (9 IP, 4 H, 2 ER) and junior RHP Kenn Kasparek (6.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K).

Notes: The Dirtbags have won their last two weekend series against UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly to draw within one game of Cal State Fullerton heading into next weekend's series against the Titans at Blair Field. LBSU got strong pitching all weekend from senior RHP Andrew Liebel (8 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K), sophomore RHP Brett Lorin (7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER) and junior RHP Vance Worley (7.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K). junior 1B Shane Peterson (6-for-10, 2 R, RBI) stayed hot to lead the offense.

Dropped Out


Vanderbilt (19)
Last Week: 0-3.
Overall: 37-18, 15-14 in SEC. (5-6 vs. Top 25).
Weekend Series: 6-5.
Notes: The Commodores were swept at Florida, stretching their losing streak to five games heading into the SEC tournament, where they'll be seeded sixth and face No. 3 seed Florida in the opener. All three games were competitive, as the Gators scored four in the eighth to win Thursday's opener, then pushed across a run in the 11th to win a back-and-forth affair Saturday.

Tulane (25)

Notes: Tulane was swept at home by Rice and finished the regular season in third place in Conference USA. Junior RHP Shooter Hunt (8 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K) fell to 9-2, 2.10 in Thursday's series opener, and the Waves blew a 4-2 lead through seven innings in the first game of Friday's doubleheader.
