WILBERFORCE, Ohio -- Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Kellen Winslow Sr. was hired Thursday as the athletic director at Central State University.

Winslow, a tight end for the San Diego Chargers from 1979 to 1987, will take over the program, which is located 15 miles east of Dayton. Winslow will help the university make the transition into full NCAA Division II membership this fall.

"In athletics, we will focus on identifying resources, recruitment, retention and the health of our athletes and, of course, graduating productive students," Winslow said.

Central State president John Garland said he is confident Winslow will provide the leadership and talent to help the university establish a greater athletic presence.

Winslow, 50, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995. His son, Kellen Winslow Jr., plays for the Cleveland Browns.
