JONESBORO, Ark. -- FIU infielder Garrett Wittels has beaten out an infield single to extend his hitting streak to 42 games and match the fourth-longest in NCAA Division I history.
Wittels hit a grounder toward third base, barely beating the throw in the eighth inning Sunday. Austin Peay's Chuck Abbott was the last to have a 42-game streak in Division I, 14 years ago.
The only players with a streak longer than Wittels in the Division I record book are Oklahoma State's Robin Ventura (58 in 1987), Wichita State's Phil Stephenson (47 in 1981) and Arizona State's Roger Schmuck (45 in 1971).
