Bejarano re-opens recruitment
With Arizona still looking to land their first commitment for 2010, the Wildcats may have received some good news Thursday with in-state prospect Daniel Bejarano announcing that he would be decommitting from Texas and reopening his recruitment.
Bejarano made the surprising announcement following an 11-month commitment to the Longhorns and coach Rick Barnes.
Bejarano is the state of Arizona's top prospect for 2010 and is its most sought after and highly regarded recruit since ex-Wildcat Jerryd Bayless. Many figured that Arizona had a good chance originally with Bejarano prior to him selecting the Longhorns, but with the uncertainty surrounding then-head coach Lute Olson, the Wildcats missed out on landing one of the premiere athletes and players in the entire country for the class of 2010.
In a report from the Arizona Daily Star's Bruce Pascoe, Pascoe described the relationship between coach Sean Miller and his staff with Bejarano's mentor Ray Arvizu Jr. as a very good one -- a relationship that should put Arizona in terrific shape to land Bejarano along with Arizona State and its coach, Herb Sendek. In fact, according to the report with Arvizu, Bejarano's first reaction to decommitting was for his mentor to get in contact with Miller and his staff.
As Pascoe's report mentions, Bejarano has decided that he would rather remain in the state of Arizona to play college basketball.
However, Arvizu Jr. made it clear that if a better opportunity presented itself for Bejarano and his family, that they would take a serious look at such a scenario. With that said, most figure Bejarano to select between Arizona and Arizona State and remain within the state.
Even with the interest in Arizona from Bejarano, the impact of Miller and his staff continues to be one of the most impressive things that the Arizona basketball program has seen since the days of Olson. While they have not landed a commitment for the class of 2010, that could change relatively soon as a number of players have expressed serious interest in Arizona and the idea of playing for Miller in Tucson -- including Rod Odom, Alex Kirk, and now Bejarano.
