IMG Academy stars steal the show
At the UA 360 Combine's last stop, IMG Academy standouts from coast to coast shined
BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Under Armour 360 Combine came to the Sunshine State this weekend for its final stop, where IMG Academy players from all over the country had a strong showing. The day was well-organized and fans were able to get a true taste of the players' athleticism, competitiveness, skill and character. It was also refreshing to see the players being taught solid fundamentals and be corrected when they executed skills incorrectly.
DeAndre Daniels (Woodland Hills, Calif./IMG Academy) 2011, SF, 6-foot-7, 190 pounds Daniels was the best prospect at the combine, but still has room to improve. He displayed a fluid shooting motion both off the catch and off the bounce. He has also made improvements with his ballhandling and is able to create many scoring opportunities for himself, but needs to be more aggressive in the lane and not avoid contact. However, Daniels has added 10 pounds to his frame over the last month, which will help improve the physicality of his game. If Daniels can keep this up, who knows how good he could be by spring. In addition, his 7-2 wingspan allows him to get deflections and block shots on defense. Daniels intends to sign late, postponing his college decision until spring. He has had many high-major offers, but does not have a favorite.
Jamari Traylor (Chicago, Ill./IMG Academy) 2011, PF, 6-6, 200 pounds Traylor was the hardest-working player at the combine, but his toughness and athleticism make him a special player. He was most effective on offense running in transition, rebounding or receiving the drop-down pass from guard penetration and finishing with a two-handed slam dunk. Traylor was also able to knock down the 15-foot jump shot, but did not look comfortable. He was relentless on the defensive backboard, coming down with tough rebounds in crowds and was able to start the fast break and deliver passes to teammates. Bradley, UIC, TCU and Nebraska have shown interest in Traylor.
Trevor Young (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River) 2011, PF, 6-4, 235 pounds Young is fundamentally sound with a great feel for the game. He can score in the post, from the perimeter or on drives to the basket with a one-dribble, pull-up jumper. He has a natural feel for creating angles in the post and using fakes to get defenders off-balance. His ability to pass and handle the ball allows him to make plays all over the floor. As Young's conditioning improves, so will his game.
One to watch
Shayok Shayok (Chicago, Ill./ IMG Academy) 2011, SF, 6-6, 190 pounds Shayok is a versatile wing who can create shots off the bounce, finish in traffic with either hand or settle for the mid-range jump shot. He likes to use the left-to-right, crossover dribble to attack his defender off the bounce and has an explosive first step when driving the basketball and good elevation and rhythm on his jump shot. He will be an asset at the college level because he can defend both wing positions and as he gets stronger, he could also guard face-up power forwards. Shayok has offers from Bradley, Detroit, Duquesne and interest from Memphis, DePaul and TCU.
NotesThe most competitive player on the floor was Max Keenan (Washington, D.C./ IMG Academy/). He is a shooting guard with a high basketball IQ, who can knock down the open jump shots consistently.
The most explosive guard at the camp was 6-2 Christian Garrett (Westlake Village, Calif./ IMG Academy). He has great speed and quickness, but must improve his jump shot to reach his full potential.
Keep an eye on seventh grader Marcus Blake from the St. Petersburg area. His size and strength will eventually catch up to his skill.
The unofficial free-throw champion was junior Filip Music (Toronto, Can,/IMG Academy/), who went 25 for 25.
