Gamecocks keying on '11 DE Newberry
South Carolina and tight ends coach Jeep Hunter have offered 2011 defensive end Giorgio Newberry (Fort Pierce, Fla./Central). Newberry already has many offers around the Southeast and talked with TheBigSpur.com about his early recruitment and about the Gamecocks.
Newberry claims offers from South Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, Wisconsin, USF, UCF, West Virginia, Nebraska, Clemson, Iowa State, and others. He said that LSU and Florida State are also close to offering. He talked about what he knows about South Carolina.
"I know that Steve Spurrier is there and he won a few championships while he was at Florida," Newberry said. "If he is there, then they must have a petty good coaching staff. Jeep Hunter is my recruiter but I haven't really got to talk with him yet. I plan on doing that soon."
The 6-foot-5, 250-pounder talked about what he has seen from the Gamecocks so far this year and about a future visit to Columbia.
"I've watched them a few times and they have looked pretty good," Newberry said. "They go hard every play, especially the defense. They have a really good defense. I see the defensive line gets penetration on every play. I'm going to try to make it up there sometime. I plan on seeing a lot of campuses and going to a lot of camps this spring and summer, so I'm sure I will get to South Carolina then."
Newberry has already visited South Florida multiple times and talked about them.
"I've been up there for a game this year and also visited this summer," Newberry said. "They actually suprised me with how nice it is. They have a awesome and cool coaching staff. They make me feel at home when I'm there."
Newberry plans on visiting Florida when they play Florida State later this year. That is the only visit he has planned for the rest of the year. He said that West Virginia was recruiting him the hardest right now because they are sending him a lot of mail.
He talked about what he is looking for in a school and if he has a timeframe on a decision right now.
"Academics will be first," Newberry said. "I'm also looking for a good environment and football program. I'm a long ways from making a decision so I'm not sure on that right now."
With all this early interest coming Newberry's way, he talked about if he is ready to name his top schools.
"Not yet," Newberry said. "Maybe after the year I can give you a top ten or something. I'm still getting offers right now so I"m going to wait it out."
Newberry is on the ESPNU150 Watch List by ESPN/Scouts Inc.
