CB Rose could be close to committing

Leeds cornerback Jonathan Rose didn't commit to Auburn on Saturday. But he came close. After an unofficial visit to the Auburn campus with his father, a former Auburn defensive back, Rose said the Tigers jumped to the top of his list.

"Right now. Auburn is high on my list and is most likely going to be where I go to school," Rose said.

Rose arrived early in the afternoon and spent the rest of the day visiting with Auburn coaches and touring campus and athletic department facilities. He met with head coach Gene Chizik, cornerbacks coach Phillip Lolley and safeties coach Tommy Thigpen, his primary recruiter.

"I talked to Coach Chizik about school and football, how he would be one of my position coaches," Rose said. "I talked to the position coaches. I talked to Coach Lolley about the coverages they use and how they would play into my strengths. I got to talk to Coach Thig for a little while. We talked about if I come to Auburn what they have to offer."

Rose, a lifelong Auburn fan, has firm offers from Auburn, Alabama and Florida State. He visited Alabama last month.

Charles Rose, Jonathan's father, was a four-year Auburn letterman, finishing his career in 1996. His mission now is to help his son deal with the recruiting process.

"It's exciting," Charles Rose said. "I'm more excited for him. I'm just trying to make it fun for him and keep him grounded and keep it realistic for him."

Charles Rose said he is impressed with the direction of the program under Chizik and his staff.

"They are very impressive," Rose said. "I like what they are doing. They are trying to implement some of the old Auburn - work hard, be mean and tough. But they are also trying to get better athletes."

Charles Rose said he enjoyed getting a closeup look at the changes Auburn has undergone since his playing days ended with a victory over Army in the Independence Bowl.

"I've been back down the past year, but I haven't seen it to the extent I saw today," he said. "It's nice. There are a lot of nice changes."

Jonathan said he doesn't plan to make a final decision until after his senior season.

"I'm going to get all that out of the way, then I'm going to focus on the college thing," Jonathan said. "I'm going to take my time and make sure I see all the colleges before I make my decision.

"Auburn will most likely be my choice."
