Touted freshman guard Brandon Cotton of Detroit-DePorres, Mich., is off Michigan State's team and might transfer. "I don't plan on him being back as a player," coach Tom Izzo said, adding that the decision to part ways was mutual. Izzo said Cotton has been dealing with personal issues, but that he is not having academic difficulty. Cotton, who recently returned from a stress fracture that sidelined him for a month, hasn't decided where he will transfer or if he will leave school this semester.

Sophomore starting guard/forward DeForrest Riley-Smith of Cincinnati-Winton Woods, Ohio, is transfering from Penn State to Xavier. He was averaging 13.3 points and 5.6 rebounds for PSU, but wanted to move closer to home for personal reasons.

Illinois has a commitment from Class 2005 junior guard Jamar Smith of Peoria-Richwoods, Ill., over interest from Marquette, Indiana, Wisconsin and Kansas. The Illini recently gained Class 2005 junior forward David Palmer of Antioch, Tenn., over Tennessee, Oklahoma, Purdue and Notre Dame, among others.

Freshman guard Jimmy Tobias of Fort Lauderdale-Dillard, Fla., is transfering from Oklahoma to Seminole CC, Fla. Tobias averaged 2.0 points and 1.2 rebounds in his six games with the Sooners this season.
