Irish grab first two Class of 2005 commits

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have their first two Class 2005 commitments in defensive backs Brandon Harrison of Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne, Ohio; and David Bruton of Miamisburg, Ohio.

Nebraska has a commitment from Class 2005 Top 150 offensive lineman Craig Roark of Ada, Okla., over Arizona, Kansas State, LSU, Missouri and Ohio State, among many others.

The Oklahoma Sooners gained a pledge from offensive lineman Brandon Keith of McAlester, Okla/Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, Okla., who originally picked the Sooners in Class 2003. Oklahoma recently added a commitment from receiver Manuel Johnson of Gilmer, Tex., who had 79 receptions as a junior. Among those that offered scholarships were Kansas State, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Houston.

Ohio State has a commitment from receiver Brian Hartline of Canton-GlenOak, Ohio, over Iowa, Cincinnati, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt and Stanford, among others.

Michigan has added two Class 2005 commitments in running back Mister Simpson of Cincinnati-Colerain, Ohio; and punter/kicker Zoltan Mesko of Twinsburg, Ohio.

Purdue has pledges from linebacker/defensive back Jason Werner of Indianapolis-Roncalli, Ind; defensive lineman Michael Neal of Merrillville, Ind; and defensive/offensive back Dray Mason of Indianapolis-Bishop Chatard, Ind.

Illinois has a commitment from defensive back Andre Powell of Pahokee, Fla., over Rutgers, Georgia and Central Florida.

Pittsburgh has Class 2005 commitments from defensive back Domenic Jones of Columbus-Brookhaven, Ohio, over Michigan State, Penn State, Minnesota and Iowa, among others; and defensive back/running back Bryan Williams of Akron-Buchtel, Ohio, over Illinois, North Carolina and Akron.

Boston College pledged Class 2005 tight end/defensive lineman Jim Ramella of Cleveland-St. Ignatius, Ohio.

West Virginia pledged receiver Darren Brownlee of Germantown-Northwest, Md.

Connecticut has Class 2005 commitments from offensive lineman Mike Hicks of Seymour, Conn; and defensive lineman Andrew Presnell of Middletown, Md.

North Carolina has a commitment from tight end/running back/defensive lineman Nick Starcevic of Charlotte-Catholic, NC.

Virginia has its 18th Class 2005 commitment in defensive back/running back Mike Brown of Jersey City-St. Peter's Prep, NJ., over Tennessee, Rutgers, Notre Dame and Penn State, among many offers.

Virginia Tech has a Class 2005 commitment from offensive lineman Antonio North of Stafford-North Stafford, Va., over North Carolina State, Virginia and West Virginia.

Fresno State pledged quarterback Ryan Colburn of Visalia-Central Valley Christian, Cal.

The Wisconsin Badgers have their third Class 2005 commitment in defensive lineman Dan Cascone of Newtown, Conn.

Iowa has added Class 2004 defensive lineman Ettore Ewen of Tampa-Wharton, Fla., for this upcoming season.

The Indiana Hoosiers have their first Class 2005 pledge in kicker Joe Kleinsmith of Lakewood-St. Edward, Ohio.

Colorado has a Class 2005 commitment from defensive/offensive lineman Jeremy Hauck of Niwot, Colo.

Baylor pledged linebacker Shon Brown of Waco, Tex; and offensive lineman Kellen Taylor of Richmond-Foster, Tex/Kilgore CC, Tex. The Bears recently gained running back/defensive back Quieto Teasley of Katy-Cinco Ranch, Tex., over Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Pittsburgh, Kansas and Wisconsin, among others.

Kansas has a commitment from offensive lineman Adam Welty of Newton, Kan. The Jayhawks recently gained defensive back/receiver Darrell Stuckey of Kansas City-Washington, Kan.

Kansas State picked up commitments from defensive back Kevin Hollis of Gilmer, Okla., over offers from Nebraska, Mississippi State and Duke; and offensive lineman Nick Stringer of Topeka-Hayden, Kan., over Oklahoma State. Stringer was considering Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

Maryland has 13 commitments after pledging running back Asaph Schwapp of Hartford-Weaver, Conn; and defensive back Chris Rogers of Lakeland-Evangel Christian, Fla. The Terps recently gained defensive linemen Jeremy Navarre of Joppa-Joppatowne, Md., over Penn State; and Barrod Heggs of Garden City, Ga.

SEC List
Highly-rated quarterback Jonathan Crompton of Waynesville-Tuscola, NC., has chosen Tennessee over 60 offers, including Georgia and Miami-Florida. Among many others were Clemson, LSU, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Southern California, Virginia, Michigan and Nebraska. The Vols recently gained defensive back/running back Marsalous Johnson of Smyrna, Tenn., over Mississippi, Mississippi State and Wake Forest.

Class 2005 Top 150 receiver Mohamed Massaquoi of Charlotte-Independence, NC., has committed to the Georgia Bulldogs over Tennessee, Virginia, Clemson, Maryland, Michigan and North Carolina State, among others. Massaquoi, who caught 87 passes as a junior, joins prep teammate quarterback Joe Cox, who recently decommitted from Duke for the Bulldogs. Cox passed for 3983 yards and 43 touchdowns last season.

Class 2004 defensive back/athlete Michael Grant of Stone Mountain-Stephenson, Ga., had his application refused after signing with Georgia and will join Arkansas for this upcoming season.

Defensive lineman Chase Pittman of Shreveport-Evangel Christian, La., has transferred from Texas to LSU. He played in 10 games for the Longhorns last season as a redshirt-freshman. His older brother, Cole, who had also signed with Texas, was killed in an automobile accident on a return trip to Austin in 2001.

Mississippi State has a commitment from receiver Adron Chambers of Pensacola, Fla. The Bulldogs recently gained defensive back Keith Fitzhugh of Lovejoy, Ga., over Southern California, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Maryland and Vanderbilt.

Class 2005 quarterback Kevin Lopina of Concord-De La Salle, Cal., is headed to Oregon State over offers from Arizona, Arizona State and Nebraska. The Beavers recently gained quarterback Sean Canfield of Carlsbad, Cal.

Class 2005 receiver/athlete Brandon Gibson of Puyallup-Rogers, Wash., picked Washington State.

Mountain West List
Utah has a Class 2005 commitment from offensive/defensive lineman Tony Bergstrom of Salt Lake City-Skyline, Utah, who will first go on mission. The Utes also gained redshirt-freshman quarterback Mike Affleck of Provo-Timpview, Utah, who is transferring from Arizona State.
