Gators' recruiting swamp continues

The Florida Gators have a pledge from class 2005 receiver Louis Murphy of St. Petersburg-Lakewood, Fla., over Maryland, Iowa, Duke, South Florida and Louisville.

Florida recently gained four outstanding commitments in Top 150 defensive back Avery Atkins of Daytona Beach-Mainland, Fla; Top 150 defensive back Demetrice Morley of Miami-Killian, Fla; Super Prospect defensive lineman Vladimir Richard of Sunrise-Piper, Fla; and Super Prospect linebacker/defensive lineman Gerald Williams of Lauderdale Lakes-Anderson, Fla.

Mississippi pledged receiver J.D. Lawhorn of Memphis-University, Tenn., who had 65 receptions as a junior.

Clemson has a commitment from offensive lineman Quentez Ruffin of Tallahassee-Leon, Fla., over LSU, North Carolina State, Kansas State, South Carolina and Central Florida. The Tigers recently gained defensive back Hadrian Lewis of Goose Creek-Stratford, SC; and tight end Paul Muse of Jacksonville-First Coast, Fla.

Syracuse has a Class 2005 commitment from quarterback Adam Hearns of Lansdale-North Penn, Pa., over Purdue, UConn and Temple.

Arizona has a Class 2005 commitment from defensive back Corey Hall of DeSoto, Tex. The Wildcats recently gained receiver Mike Thomas of DeSoto, Tex.

Houston pledged kicker Garrett Lafevre of Spring-Klein Collins, Tex. The Cougars recently gained offensive lineman Justin Washington of Port Arthur-Memorial, Tex.

Navy pledged quarterback Andrew Lair of New Orleans-Brother Martin, La.

One of the nation's top Class 2005 quarterbacks, Mark Sanchez of Mission Viejo, Cal., is near a decision between Ohio State, the USC Trojans, Texas and Notre Dame. He passed for 2460 yards and 29 touchdowns as a junior.

Top 150 quarterback Rob Schoenhoft, a Class 2005 prospect from Cincinnati-Xavier, Ohio, has narrowed his choices to Ohio State and Michigan. Among many others were Florida, LSU, Michigan State and Notre Dame.

Indiana has a commitment from Class 2005 offensive lineman Paul Backowski of Foley, Minn., over Wyoming.

Oklahoma State has gained Class 2005 commitments from defensive back T.J. Bell of DeSoto, Tex; and linebacker Eric Preast of Sulphur, Okla. The Cowboys recently gained Class 2004 offensive lineman Jeremy Palmoore of Memphis-Hamilton, Tenn/Hargrave MA, Va., who originally chose Arkansas.

Outstanding quarterback Chase Daniel of Southlake-Carroll, Tex., has pledged to the Missouri Tigers over offers from Duke, Houston, Maryland, Oklahoma State, Stanford, TCU and Kansas State. He passed for 2681 yards and 42 touchdowns as a junior.

Texas Tech has a commitment from offensive lineman Louis Vasquez of Corsicana, Tex., over Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State, Nebraska, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State.

Kansas State has a commitment from receiver Andrew Richards of Keller, Tex., over North Carolina. The Wildcats recently gained receiver/quarterback Zac Robinson of Littleton-Chatfield, Colo.

Pittsburgh signed two late Class 2004 prospects in receiver Jason Gaffney of Oakland-Hayward, Cal/Laney CC, Cal; and offensive lineman Dominic Williams of Colorado Springs-Harrison, Colo/Air Force Prep.

West Virginia pledged linebacker Zac Cooper of Weirton-Weir, WVa. The Mountaineers recently gained quarterback Jarrett Brown of West Palm Beach-Palm Beach Lakes, Fla., over Central Florida, Iowa and Minnesota.

Rutgers has a verbal from Top 150 offensive lineman Brian Roche of Ramsey-Don Bosco Prep, NJ., over Miami-Florida. Among over 40 others were Virginia, Boston College, North Carolina, Stanford, Wisconsin and Oklahoma. The Scarlet Knights recently gained receiver/athlete Tiquan Underwood of Lawrenceville-Notre Dame High, NJ., over Vanderbilt.

Temple has pledged Class 2005 linebacker Bryant Parker of Randallstown, Md.

Virginia has its 19th Class 2005 commitment in linebacker Darryl Gresham Jr. of Roanoke-William Fleming, Va., over Clemson, Virginia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee and Florida, among others.

North Carolina pledged Class 2005 receiver Brandon Tate of Burlington-Cummings, NC., over West Virginia and East Carolina.

Georgia Tech has gained Class 2005 commitments from defensive lineman Brad Sellers of Arlington-Bowie, Tex., over Duke and Toledo; and defensive back Jahi' Word-Daniels of Hoover, Ala., over Duke, Louisville and Vanderbilt.

Florida State has a verbal from offensive lineman Sergio Render of Newnan, Ga., over Mississippi State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Duke added verbals from kicker Joe Surgan of Ft. Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas, Fla; receiver Raphael Chestnut of Reidsville, NC; and quarterback Zack Asack of Westwood-Xaverian Brothers, Mass.

Linebacker Deveon Simmons of Virginia Beach-Landstown, Va., pledged to Virginia Tech over Florida, Georgia, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Pittsburgh, among others.

Alabama has a late signee for Class 2004 in defensive back Jeffrey Dukes of Oxford-Lafayette County, Miss/Northwest Mississippi CC, Miss.

Georgia has a commitment from Class 2005 offensive lineman Ian Smith of Cartersville, Ga., over Florida, Florida State, Alabama and Louisville.
