Deacons lead early top 50

Rashad McCants pondered the question of who he would tab as the No. 1 team: North Carolina or Wake Forest?

The rising North Carolina junior guard didn't hesitate.

"I pick Duke, because I know everyone else will,'' McCants said while practicing with the World Championship for Young Men's USA Basketball team in New Jersey last weekend.

"They always pick Duke.''

Well, we can assure McCants that Duke won't be the choice of ESPN.com or likely any other media outlet.

But choosing a No. 1 is going to be harder, whether it's in July for ESPN.com's Sizzling Summer Top 50, or in the preseason.

The beauty of the 2004-05 season is that there is no consensus favorite. Arguments can be made for Wake Forest, North Carolina, Kansas, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Connecticut, Oklahoma State or even Arizona.

"But if I had to pick, we've got a good chance to be No. 2 behind Wake Forest,'' McCants said.

We agree, for now.

Let the summer debate rage:

Summer Sizzling Top 50
1. Wake Forest

WHY: Skip Prosser said he couldn't wait to coach this team. He is anticipating the Demon Deacons being one of those special teams that a coach maybe gets once a profession (see: Saint Joseph's Phil Martelli during the 2003-04 season). The Demon Deacons return their team nearly intact. Chris Paul could be the national player of the year and a top three draft pick in 2005. The point guard is a gem of a player and an even better person. His backcourt mates of Justin Gray and Taron Downey are all working out feverishly this summer. Eric Williams, the force in the post, is trying to keep his weight in check. Kyle Visser, Trent Strickland, Vytas Danelius and Jamaal Levy are all returning to give the Demon Deacons one of the deepest teams in the country.

WHY NOT: The only way this team folds too soon is if they still can't play consistent defense. They understand that what they did a year ago didn't always work. They've all been savvy to their tendency to outscore teams. If they commit to playing defense, then they could find themselves in the top spot for some time. Watching Georgia Tech in the Final Four seemed to motivate this crew more than anything else.

SUMMER BUZZ: The players are raving about Danelius' commitment. He's been working out as hard as ever. They believe he'll be a potential double-double player after an injury-riddled junior season.

2. North Carolina

WHY: It's hard not to love this lineup. Roy Williams has a team built for a title. Juniors Sean May, Rashad McCants and Raymond Felton are back after tasting the NCAA Tournament. Seniors Jawad Williams, Jackie Manuel and Melvin Scott are ready to be leaders. And the addition of Marvin Williams gives the Heels a stud as a newcomer in the starting lineup. Williams could end up scoring as well as McCants, which makes the Tar Heels even harder to defend. Roy Williams still wonders about depth, but the overall talent might be the best in the ACC.

WHY NOT: This team is still learning how to be a champion. Getting to the NCAAs was a new experience. Williams thought the Tar Heels could have beaten Texas in the second round of the NCAAs last season, but something was missing. They still need to find consistency, like beating Connecticut but losing at Clemson a year ago.

SUMMER BUZZ: Williams, as in Marvin, not Roy, is the talk of the Tar Heels. He could have easily chosen the NBA draft like fellow signee J.R. Smith. But he chose to go to school, and the Tar Heels got the more versatile of the two. McCants is also proving to be more mature and was snapping 3s and jumpers at will at the Nike Camp earlier this month. May is healthy and in shape, a plus for his preparation for a potential banner season.

3. Kansas

WHY: Wayne Simien, Keith Langford and Aaron Miles have been to two Final Fours and an Elite Eight (granted, Simien was injured for one of the Final Four runs, but it's still impressive). These three players are winners. J.R. Giddens might be the most talented of the group, or at least has the potential to be more of an NBA player. Add in another season with Bill Self and the Jayhawks have the pieces for a run to the title. They lost David Padgett but then picked up C.J. Giles and Alex Galindo to go with another newcomer forward in Sasha Kaun.

WHY NOT: It's hard to find a reason why this team couldn't make a run for the title. Sure, they struggled at times last season, but there were also injuries to Michael Lee that caused a few problems. Jeff Graves, the team's enigma a year ago, didn't help the cause. Lee is healthy and Graves is gone, so the issues could be solved.

SUMMER BUZZ: Padgett's departure was initially a stunner, but now the Jayhawks are glad he's gone. They didn't want him around if he was going to be demanding minutes. Getting Giles and Galindo was a spring coup, and the coaching staff is to the point where they're saying, David who?

4. Georgia Tech

WHY: The Yellow Jackets' run to the national title game wasn't a fluke. Georgia Tech will be one of the most experienced teams in the country, with seniors Will Bynum, B.J. Elder, Isma'il Muhammed, Anthony McHenry and Luke Schenscher, as well as junior Jarrett Jack. This team will have size, strength and quickness. Coach Paul Hewitt is already a star in the profession and should be able to handle the early-season hype.

WHY NOT: They could miss Marvin Lewis' leadership, but that shouldn't be a reason why the Yellow Jackets will fail. The only reason this team won't be a player for the Final Four is if they can't handle all of the heat. Georgia Tech will now be an attraction at every stop.

SUMMER BUZZ: Bynum and Jack are jacked to get on the court. The two were at the Nike Camp in Indianapolis, itching for the season to start. They are both ready for even better seasons. Jack is getting a lot of NBA vibe, and he might not return for his senior season with so many departing after next year. And it's no surprise that he's going all out this summer to have a fantastic junior season.

5. Syracuse

WHY: The Orange bring back two of the best players at their respective positions in guard junior Gerry McNamara and senior forward Hakim Warrick. Warrick could be a national player-of-the-year candidate. McNamara is one of the toughest players in the country. Now add seniors Josh Pace and Craig Forth and the Orange have one of the more experienced teams in the Big East. The sophomore class of Terrence Roberts, Demetris Nichols, Darryl Watkins and Louie McCroskey is ready to blossom. And if Billy Edelin gets his academic act in order, then they return their starting point guard from the national title team. If not, they have a newcomer in Josh Wright to fill the void.

WHY NOT: The point could be an issue and Edelin could still be a distraction. The bench could fail the Orange, but that's unlikely. This team doesn't have many flaws, considering it will win games at home and be a tough out on the road. Jim Boeheim has this crew ready to make another run two years removed from the last national title.

SUMMER BUZZ: It's all about Edelin's eligibility. The coaching staff is confident that he can become eligible, but he needs the NCAA to be compassionate about his personal decisions that led him to leave school last semester. If he's given a break, then the Orange chances rise.

6. Oklahoma State

WHY: We got plenty of flak for not putting the Cowboys in the top 10 in April. We were wrong. We admit it. We won't make the same mistake. The Cowboys lost Big 12 player of the year in Tony Allen but could have the 2005 winner with Joey Graham. John Lucas III is back at the point and continues to mature as a scorer. Ivan McFarlin is the workhorse inside and should team up nicely with JC transfer Aaron Pettway. Sharpshooter Daniel Bobik returns on the perimeter, and don't forget the Cowboys also added controversial former Carolina signee JamesOn Curry, who was North Carolina's leading high school scorer.

WHY NOT: Losing Allen's toughness will be hard to replace. McFarlin has to get nastier. So, too, do Bobik and Lucas. But if they can find that mean streak, then the Cowboys could win the Big 12 again. Expect the Pokes to run the table in Stillwater games. And, remember, Eddie Sutton is nearing his retirement, which makes the Cowboys' sense of urgency even more intense.

SUMMER BUZZ: Graham was the star of the counselor games at the Nike Camp. He's becoming everyone's favorite to have a breakout senior season. Don't be surprised if Graham is a top 10 pick in the NBA draft. His workout regimen and overall skill level have earned him high praise. He simply has to improve his jump shot and range to become more of a complete player.

7. Connecticut

WHY: The Huskies didn't win the title with just Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon. Forwards Josh Boone and Charlie Villanueva are back and Ed Nelson is eligible, giving the Huskies one of the top frontcourts in the country. The backcourt should be set with potential national freshman of the year Rudy Gay on board next to Rashad Anderson and/or Denham Brown and Marcus Williams. There is no reason why coach Jim Calhoun won't keep the Huskies among the nation's elite.

WHY NOT: Leadership is still a question. Gay could be the team's best player, but isn't ready to take on that role. Anderson is emerging as a leader, but it could be hard for him if he's the third or fourth option. And settling on a go-to guy will be a chore unless Gay quickly becomes the BMOC.

SUMMER BUZZ: It's all about Gay. The staff can't wait to coach him. He could have been a first-round pick and likely would have gone ahead of J.R. Smith, Dorell Wright and possibly Josh Smith. He is clearly the next UConn star.

8. Arizona

WHY: After we wrote about the Wildcats last week, some questioned why we bought into the Arizona publicity. But it's easy to like this crew. The Wildcats bring back a core group of Channing Frye, Hassan Adams, Mustafa Shakur and Salim Stoudamire -- four players who would start for most teams. The Wildcats have a full roster and have the beef back in Isaiah Fox after an injury.

WHY NOT: It's Arizona. This crew has been flaky, to say the least. No one would be surprised if the Wildcats stumbled again and failed to live up to expectations.

SUMMER BUZZ: The coaching staff is talking up this team as if it is a title contender. They're pumped about Fox's recovery and the newcomer class, and believe forward Ivan Radenovic could be the surprise of the Pac-10 after getting stronger and adjusting to the quickness of the American game.

9. Illinois

WHY: The Illini have one of the best backcourts in the country, with Dee Brown and Deron Williams. This tandem is jet-quick and can score at will. The Illini should be one of the more entertaining teams to watch next season. Bruce Weber won the Big Ten last season and is poised to repeat again. He has the role players with Luther Head, Roger Powell, James Augustine and Nick Smith all buying into this plan. Any division is now a distant memory.

WHY NOT: Consistent inside scoring could be an issue. But the Illini seemed to compensate for that a year ago. The perimeter-based Illini didn't cry out for more inside scoring too often. If this team can settle down and handle the expectations, then they should be in the hunt.

SUMMER BUZZ: Brown and Williams are a bit drained from playing all last summer for USA Basketball and then on an Illini European tour plus the long season. They both pulled out of the USA Basketball trials over the weekend because of injuries. Weber needs them to rest to ensure they're ready for the long haul of a title run.

10. Duke

WHY: The Blue Devils are probably the least deserving of a top 10 ranking. But let's not forget they still have Daniel Ewing, Shelden Williams, J.J. Redick and Shavlik Randolph. Plenty of teams would love to have any one of those four players. The addition of DeMarcus Nelson will instantly shore up the bench. The schedule is favorable at home, and coach Mike Krzyzewski is determined to prove wrong the people who claimed the Blue Devils would swoon after losing Luol Deng and Shaun Livingston.

WHY NOT: Point guard will be an issue. Sean Dockery will struggle at times. This team was made for Livingston to step in for Chris Duhon. Not having an experienced or extremely talented playmaker will hurt Duke's transition game. The Blue Devils also have only eight players. They could be like Arizona a year ago where injuries and foul problems could derail the season.

SUMMER BUZZ: Randolph is ready for a breakout season. He didn't live up to expectations his first two seasons, but he's going to get the chance to shine in year three. If he can't produce consistently with this group, then he may never be a star.

11. Mississippi State

WHY: The SEC player of the year in Lawrence Roberts returned for his senior season. Point guard Gary Ervin and wing Shane Power return, too, making the Bulldogs the favorite in the SEC West.

WHY NOT: Losing Timmy Bowers will hurt this team's chemistry and toughness. They also must get production out of incoming forward Walter Sharpe.

SUMMER BUZZ: Rick Stansbury worked as hard behind the scenes to keep Roberts as he has for any other recruit. The Sharpe recruitment (he's from Birmingham) caused a bit of a stir, especially with their most-hated rivals -- Alabama, not Ole Miss.

12. Kentucky

WHY: The Wildcats possess, perhaps, the top recruiting class in the country. Center Randolph Morris and guards Rajon Rondo and Joe Crawford will all have an impact. They could all compete for SEC freshman of the year. Chuck Hayes is back as the staple in the post, and Kelenna Azubuike is ready for a breakout season.

WHY NOT: The Wildcats' core will be young, so youthful that it might take a season for a title run.

SUMMER BUZZ: Hayes is ready to assume the sole leadership role. He's mature enough to handle the responsibility and is the extension of coach Tubby Smith.

13. Louisville

WHY: The Cardinals have the pieces in place with star Francisco Garcia as a junior, Taquan Dean as the lead guard and Ellis Myles back after an injury-plagued season.

WHY NOT: The Cardinals still lacked consistency and that won't change if they can't find another reliable scorer off the bench. Newcomers Brian Johnson and Tello Palacios must have an impact.

SUMMER BUZZ: The Cardinals don't feel they will be as hurt as some would think by the failure of signees Sebastian Telfair and Donta Smith to reach campus. Both players stayed in the NBA draft.

14. Maryland

WHY: The Terps return everyone save Jamar Smith off an ACC tournament title team. The Terps emerged as one of the toughest teams in the country during March and shouldn't be taken lightly in the preseason.

WHY NOT: There's no need to worry about John Gilchrist and Nik Caner-Medley, but the Terps must ensure that they get consistent quality production from their role players. And the ACC is too loaded for a late start.

SUMMER BUZZ: JC transfer Sterling Ledbetter was injured in a May car accident, but the hope is that he'll still be a contributor next season.

15. Michigan State

WHY: The Spartans underachieved last season but still return everyone that mattered. The Spartans have a core group of Paul Davis, Chris Hill, Maurice Ager, Kelvin Torbert, Alan Anderson and Shannon Brown. They have the talent to push Illinois for the Big Ten title.

WHY NOT: The Spartans still have too many players that play the same position. The key will be incoming point Drew Neitzel's learning curve. If he's sharp then the Spartans could be a top 10 team.

SUMMER BUZZ: The Tom Izzo-to-the-NBA story died quickly. Izzo may be frustrated, but he's smart enough to realize he's a better fit right now in college and is determined to turn the Spartans back into a Final Four team.

16. Notre Dame

WHY: The return of point guard Chris Thomas and forward Torin Francis, both coming off injuries, makes the Irish a sleeper out of the Big East. The Irish add Arizona transfer Dennis Latimore for more beef inside. And the expectation is that Chris Quinn is going to have a bust-out junior season.

WHY NOT: The Irish could fall if Francis' back isn't totally healthy after surgery. He has to be the key piece inside for the Irish to have balance.

SUMMER BUZZ: They love Latimore. But transfers can lead to overzealous hype.

17. Wisconsin

WHY: Sure, the Badgers lost Big Ten player of the year Devin Harris. But that doesn't mean Wisconsin can't challenge for the Big Ten title or the top 10. Boo Wade, Mike Wilkinson, Zach Morley and the return of a healthy Alando Tucker as well as Brian Butch coming off a redshirt season gives the Badgers a stellar group. Bo Ryan can mold this group into a Big Ten title contender, especially if he can get something out of Penn State transfer guard Sharif Chambliss and freshman center Greg Stiemsma.

WHY NOT: Determining a go-to player could be an issue. This team could end up being too balanced and might not have a late-game leader.

SUMMER BUZZ: Butch put on much-needed weight and Tucker is tearing up the summer scene to give the Badgers hope they have essentially two star newcomers since Tucker missed so much of last season.

18. Pittsburgh

WHY: Point Carl Krauser and forward Chris Taft are two of the most talented players at their respective positions. Sure, the Panthers will miss Jaron Brown and Julius Page, but having Chevy Troutman for another season is a huge plus. He gives them the toughness needed for them to carry out Jamie Dixon's style.

WHY NOT: The Panthers still need a reliable perimeter threat. If they can find one, then they could crack the top 10.

SUMMER BUZZ: It's all about Taft. NBA personnel were already pumping him up to be a top 10 pick in 2005. He still has plenty to learn, but he's on track for a banner sophomore season.

19. Memphis

WHY: The only key player gone off last season's team was Antonio Burks. The Tigers have one of the top sophomores in the country in Sean Banks, a gem of an athlete in Rodney Carney and, perhaps, the steal of the recruiting class in point guard Darius Washington.

WHY NOT: Memphis has been a slow-starting team, getting in ruts at times during the season. If the Tigers can get on a roll and stay consistent, then they have the pieces for a run.

SUMMER BUZZ: Coach John Calipari had hip replacement surgery and is hobbling around in July. But his enthusiasm for this team isn't dampened. He can't wait to coach this crew.

20. Alabama

WHY: The Tide went to the Elite Eight and return the core of their team, including Kennedy Winston, Chuck Davis, Earnest Shelton and Jemareo Davidson.

WHY NOT: Losing Antoine Pettway means the Tide lost their heart and soul.

SUMMER BUZZ: Mark Gottfried is trying to downplay this squad, letting everyone know they should be picked third behind Mississippi State and LSU in the SEC West. Wishful thinking.

21. Texas

WHY: The Longhorns could easily become a top 10 team by season's end. Texas has one of the top recruiting classes in the country, led by power forward Mike Williams and point guard Daniel Gibson. The Longhorns lost a lot, but they still have stud forward P.J. Tucker, and potential NBA draft pick Jason Klotz up front. Guards Kenny Taylor, Kenton Paulino, Edgar Moreno and Sydmill Harris are all back. So, too, is big man Brad Buckman. This team is as deep as any in the country.

WHY NOT: The two missing pieces -- Brandon Mouton and Royal Ivey -- will be hard to replace. Their leadership and toughness could take awhile to fill.

SUMMER BUZZ: The bizarre declaration for the NBA by freshman center LaMarcus Aldridge. He had a stress fracture in his back that wasn't healed so he couldn't work out for teams. Coach Rick Barnes expects he'll be healthy enough to possibly start.

22. Gonzaga

WHY: The Bulldogs are still stocked. Small forward Adam Morrison could be one of the best at his positions next season. Ronny Turiaf has a chance to be a first to third-team All-American at power forward. JC recruit J.P. Batista completes one of the toughest frontcourts in the West. Expect the Bulldogs to lean on their freshmen David Pendergraft, Josh Heytfelt, Pierre-Marie Altidor-Cespedes as well as Texas Tech transfer Nathan Doudney.

WHY NOT: Point guard is still a big question mark. Altidor-Cespedes and Derek Ravio have huge shoes to fill with Blake Stepp's departure.

SUMMER BUZZ: Morrison and Turiaf are the talk of the summer. Morrison could be on the fast track to leave early for the NBA, and Turiaf's commitment to stay stateside and stay in shape was a huge plus.

23. Washington

WHY: The Huskies bring back the most exciting player at his position, combo guard Nate Robinson. He was the talk of the Chicago pre-draft camp and not just for his dunks. He played as a true point guard in the camp. The Huskies also return Brandon Roy, Tre Simmons, Bobby Jones, Will Conroy and Mike Jensen -- the core of last season's surprise second-place Pac-10 finisher.

WHY NOT: Consistent inside scoring could still be a question, although newcomer Joel Smith could help as well as New Mexico transfer Jamaal Williams. The Huskies also will be the marked team in the league like Arizona and how they handle that role will be an interesting watch.

SUMMER BUZZ: It's all about Robinson. He was the hit in Chicago and then was always one of the last players working out at the Nike Camp among the counselors.

24. Florida

WHY: Anthony Roberson decided against declaring for the draft. He's one of the top scorers in the SEC and is maturing into a leader for the Gators. Matt Walsh and David Lee are still two of the more talented players at their positions in the SEC if they play up to their potential. And, as always, the Gators have another stellar recruiting class led by Corey Brewer, Al Horford and Joakim Noah.

WHY NOT: It's Florida. This team hasn't reached its potential in March since the 2000 title game.

SUMMER BUZZ: Lee. He was as aggressive during the Nike Camp counselor games as we've seen him. If Lee learns to be more assertive, then the Gators have a shot to finally unseat Kentucky in the SEC East.

25. Stanford

WHY: The Cardinal lost coach Mike Montgomery and Josh Childress to the NBA, Matt Lottich and Justin Davis to graduation. But the cupboard is hardly bare. New coach Trent Johnson still has a steady point in Chris Hernandez, a rising star in forward Matt Haryasz, a stable big man in Rob Little, a decent shooter in Dan Grunfeld and one of the most clutch performers in Nick Robinson (see: Arizona winning shot).

WHY NOT: Meshing with Johnson could take some time and keep the Cardinal from an unblemished non-conference. Lottich's toughness will be hard to replace. A go-to guy is still unknown.

SUMMER BUZZ: Montgomery's departure to the NBA was still the shock of the summer in the Bay Area. But keeping the hire in the Montgomery family tree eased some of the pain.

26. N.C. State

WHY: First-team all-American guard Julius Hodge decided to return for his senior season. That alone makes the Wolfpack a contender in the ACC. Getting Illian Evtimov completely healthy is a huge plus, too, and Tony Bethel, a transfer from Georgetown, will be a key contributor. Losing Marcus Melvin and Scooter Sherrill hurts, but the Wolfpack are deep enough to withstand these losses, especially with the addition of Andrew Brackman and Cedric Simmons.

WHY NOT: The Wolfpack could be a bit predictable under Hodge, but it's still a tough out at home. If they can find consistent inside scoring, then this team can continue to be a thorn in the ACC.

SUMMER BUZZ: The departure of rising sophomore guard Mike O'Donnell doesn't hurt. Neither does Herb Sendek's name being mentioned at Ohio State, even though he was never a candidate. The fact that Sendek is secure and entrenched at N.C. State is a sign he has turned this into a consistent NCAA program.

27. Oklahoma

WHY: Kelvin Sampson isn't about to go back to the NIT. He's thrilled with the development of Drew Lavender, Brandon Foust and Larry Turner. These three players form the core of next season's team. But Sampson is already raving about incoming JC power forward transfer Taj Gray, whom he sees as an immediate star.

WHY NOT: This crop of newcomers hasn't experienced the winning that had been familiar at Oklahoma. They need to quickly buy into Sampson's approach to ensure an easy transition.

SUMMER BUZZ: Seeing Kevin Bookout working out and pain free was the biggest plus at the Nike Camp for Sampson. Bookout, one of the more rugged power forwards, is recovering from shoulder surgery and said he'll be ready to go when practice starts in October. Losing guard DeAngelo Alexander was a bit bizarre. He had offseason shoulder surgery and then split for Charlotte.

28. Cincinnati

WHY: The Bearcats lost their most prolific wing scorer in Tony Bobbitt and aren't expecting to return inside enigma Robert Whaley (academics). But the rest of the team is still solid enough to warrant a potential top 20 ranking. Eric Hicks and Jason Maxiell are a pair of formidable forwards who can board with anyone in the league. James White should be more adjusted to Bob Huggins' system two years removed from Florida. And Nick Williams should be on the verge of being a more consistent scorer.

WHY NOT: The Bearcats still don't defend consistently and struggled to diversify their scoring.

SUMMER BUZZ: Huggins. He was just reinstated, effective Aug. 27, after his DUI. If he's healthy and more focused, then the Bearcats will be a factor again.

29. Michigan

WHY: The Wolverines won the postseason NIT and are on the verge of making it back to the NCAAs for the first time since 1998. Michigan brings back a junior class that has paid its dues in Daniel Horton, Lester Abram and Graham Brown. The addition of Ronald Coleman will be a huge plus, too.

WHY NOT: The Wolverines still have to solve their road woes. If they can solve that, then this team could be a factor into March.

SUMMER BUZZ: For the first time in years, everything is positive around the program. There weren't any negative hits after the NCAA investigation and penalty phase finally ended last season.

30. Villanova

WHY: This should be Villanova's year to bust out and become an NCAA Tournament team. The Wildcats had their moments a year ago. But the talent is in place for Villanova to make a run. The backcourt of Mike Nardi, Allan Ray and Randy Foye is as prolific a trio as any in the Big East. Adding newcomer Kyle Lowry is a real plus. Curtis Sumpter is turning into a gem of a forward.

WHY NOT: The Wildcats must get more out of oft-injured forward Jason Fraser. And they have to find a consistent streak on the road. This team can't afford to underachieve in the upcoming season.

SUMMER BUZZ: The NCAA two-year penalty was met with shock by the coaching staff. They all thought they were being singled out for no reason. The penalties are light, but the stigma attached to being a violator -- and then add failing to make the NCAAs last season -- makes this staff even hungrier for next season. The thinking is that this team could vault into the top 20 if things go well early.

31. LSU

WHY: The Tigers could easily vault into the top 20 with the tandem of Brandon Bass and Glen Davis up front. Davis' arrival takes the pain away from Jaime Lloreda's departure. Regis Koundjia's return gives the Tigers three legit stars at their respective positions. The guards of Xavier Whipple and Tack Minor continue to improve. This team has quickness, strength and enough youthful exuberance to be a major player in the SEC.

WHY NOT: There is a lot of expectation on Davis to be an impact player. If he's not, then Bass might find getting shots a frustrating experience.

SUMMER BUZZ: Bass was as good as gone to the NBA at one point in June. But he came to his senses once he realized he wasn't going to be in the first round. He's a special talent that still needs another year or two to find his game.

32. Boston College

WHY: The Eagles return the toughest big man to guard in the Big East in Craig Smith. They also have a stud in rising sophomore wing Jared Dudley. The Eagles were the surprise team in the Big East and nearly upset Georgia Tech in the NCAA Tournament. Rising sophomore Sean Marshall was also a steal a year ago. Jermaine Watson finally accepted his role as a ballhandler and defender, and Nate Doornekamp has emerged as a serviceable center.

WHY NOT: The Eagles could use more depth and another scoring option. They also need to be more dominant at home. BC didn't get the big-time Big East games (like two against Connecticut and Syracuse) and that could hurt its power rating.

SUMMER BUZZ: The Eagles are off to the ACC after this season and feel like they're not getting their just due on television. BC should be a top-five Big East team but is a bit player in the television package.

33. Florida State

WHY: The Seminoles lost Tim Pickett, but they do have key players Von Vafer and Alexander Johnson back. And Florida State has been a beast to beat at home. If the Seminoles can find a way to win on the road, then this team could be a factor in the ACC. Getting Diego Romero eligible is a huge plus for the inside game. The addition of newcomer guards Isaiah Swann and Jason Rich makes them instant contenders.

WHY NOT: Pickett was Mr. Everything for Florida State. His presence and leadership will be hard to replace.

SUMMER BUZZ: Leonard Hamilton hyped up Romero during his eligibility battle. A ton of expectations are on Romero to produce after the school spent countless hours on his case.

34. Vanderbilt

WHY: The Commodores run to the Sweet 16 wasn't a stretch. Sure, Matt Freije is gone, but the Commodores still return the core of their team. Don't sleep on center David Przybyszewski, Corey Smith, Mario Moore, Jason Holwerda or Julian Terrell. The Commodores should be more balanced, and coach Kevin Stallings loves his newcomer class.

WHY NOT: The Commodores shouldn't have a problem competing for a top-four finish in the SEC East. Beating out South Carolina, Georgia and possibly Tennessee for third isn't a reach. The issue will be a go-to player in Freije's absence.

SUMMER BUZZ: Stallings' flirtation with Ohio State almost led to his departure. But the school is showing more of a commitment and needs him to stay long term.

35. Missouri

WHY: The Tigers were one of the biggest disappointments a year ago (16-14, 9-7 Big 12). But that shouldn't deter this team from making an NCAA run in 2005. The Tigers still have a star in the making in Linas Kleiza up front, Jason Conley back as a legit scorer and decent role players in Thomas Gardner, Kevin Young, Jimmy McKinney and Jeffrey Ferguson. The recruiting class is chock full of impact players like guard Jason Horton, center Kalen Grimes and small forward Marshall Brown.

WHY NOT: The Tigers need to settle on a go-to guy, although Conley could flourish in that role after having it at VMI. Relying on so many new guys could slow the progression a bit for this squad.

SUMMER BUZZ: The NCAA investigation is over, but the penalty phase begins next month when the school meets with the infractions committee in Seattle. A postseason ban is unlikely. Kleiza's return from injury was a huge plus for Quin Snyder. He also has two new assistants in former head coaches Jeff Meyer and Melvin Watkins.

36. Virginia

WHY: Wake Forest coach Skip Prosser said a really good team is going to finish eighth in in the ACC. That team is probably Virginia. The Cavaliers could push the NCAA selection committee to think about going eight deep in the NCAAs. Devin Smith, Elton Brown, Jason Clark, Gary Forbes and J.R. Reynolds are all talented enough to lead the Cavs to the NCAAs -- even in eighth. A highly-touted recruiting class will help, too.

WHY NOT: Losing Derrick Byars (he transferred to Vanderbilt) was a bit of a surprise. Staff changes were a hit to the psyche of this team, too. How this team handles a brutal ACC could determine if it has enough left to make an ACC tourney run like Maryland a year ago.

SUMMER BUZZ: Pete Gillen, one of the true gentlemen in the game, is sweating out the next season. He's under heat to produce, but he could survive even with an eighth-place finish. This team has a chance to be an NCAA team.

37. George Washington

WHY: Coach Karl Hobbs has quietly built the Colonials into a potential A-10 power. The opening is there for GW to emerge as the team to beat in the A-10, taking the spotlight away from Dayton, Xavier and Saint Joseph's. GW had only one senior a year ago and we all love Pops Mensah-Bonsu. The Colonials had a chance at a late NCAA run (11-5 in the league), so this isn't a reach.

WHY NOT: GW hasn't been in the position as a favorite. How they handle this will determine if they can be a factor in the NCAAs.

SUMMER BUZZ: People tend to forget that GW had a better league record than Elite Eight Xavier (10-6). Hobbs has this team in position, and every coach in the A-10 keeps saying GW is the team to watch.

38. Marquette

WHY: The Eagles should have been better than their 19-12, 8-8 record a year ago. Replacing Dwyane Wade was impossible, but they still lost a few games they shouldn't have, or at least by wide margins. Travis Diener is one of the toughest players in the game and certainly has leadership ability. But he has more help with Steve Novak shooting 3s, and Dameon Mason ready to blossom into a potential all-league player.

WHY NOT: Getting consistent inside scoring could still be an issue for this squad. If they can develop a regular threat, then the Eagles should be a sleeper to rise again in Conference USA.

SUMMER BUZZ: Tom Crean's decision to not pursue Ohio State (although it's clear that Buckeyes AD Andy Geiger didn't put forth much of an effort, either) shows he's committed to staying with the Eagles as they enter the Big East in 2005.

39. Air Force

WHY: The Falcons weren't a fluke last season. Sure, they lost their head coach in Joe Scott to Princeton. But they replaced him with another Princeton man in Chris Mooney. Gone are A.J. Kuhle and Joel Gerlach but back are Tim Keller and Nick Welch. This system works for the Falcons in the Mountain West and remains one of the toughest to figure out for any opposing league team.

WHY NOT: The Falcons were a three-year project from cellar dwellers to a conference title team. Duplicating the effort won't be easy, but it can be done.

SUMMER BUZZ: The smooth transition from Scott to Mooney helped this program stay on top. Scott wouldn't have gone to Princeton if they didn't give the job to Mooney.

40. Tennessee

WHY: It's about time Buzz Peterson's crew makes a run to the NCAAs. Scooter McFadgon is back to launch 3s. C.J. Watson is one of the more experienced point guards in the SEC. Major Wingate, Brandon Crump and Stanley Asumnu form a respectable frontline. The addition of UCLA transfer Andre Patterson gives the Vols another potential scorer.

WHY NOT: Tennessee hasn't been able to find a consistent streak on the road. And this crew hasn't tasted enough winning yet. The pieces are in place to put last season's 7-9 SEC record in the past.

SUMMER BUZZ: McFadgon wasn't a hit at the Nike Camp, but he did hold his own. The departure of guard John Winchester to Quinnipiac was a bit surprising. Not getting signee Jackie Butler, who went to the NBA, was not.

41. Providence

WHY: The Friars have a shot to get back to the NCAAs because Ryan Gomes returned. The potential Big East player of the year is that important to the Friars' chances. Donnie McGrath is back at the point and should settle down now that he has played two seasons. Tuukka Kotti, Gerald Brown and Dwight Brewington became solid role players for the Friars. Getting Charlie Burch late and Desean White earlier inside are a must in the absence of Marcus Douthit.

WHY NOT: The Friars flamed out last season and were a first-round disappointment. Gomes needs more help so he doesn't wilt down the stretch. That puts more pressure on the newcomers.

SUMMER BUZZ: McGrath has his legal issues in the past, and Gomes is as hungry as ever to lead the Friars back to the NCAAs. He made a quick decision after the Chicago pre-draft camp that he wasn't ready for the league.

42. Charlotte

WHY: The 49ers could be this season's UAB, a lesser-known Conference USA team that makes a Sweet 16 run. The 49ers return four of five starters, including big man Martin Iti, rising star forward Curtis Withers and deep 3-ball threat Brendan Plavich. Bobby Lutz is one of the hidden gems in coaching that needs to get his due.

WHY NOT: The 49ers still aren't a consistent road team and until they cure that blemish, they'll struggle to crack the top 20.

SUMMER BUZZ: Iti said he was unlikely to return at the Chicago pre-draft camp. He wasn't ready and measured at 6-foot-8 even though he's listed at 7 feet by the school. But he surprised everyone on the staff when he came to his senses and returned for what could be a breakout sophomore season.

43. Oregon

WHY: The Ducks could have one of the top backcourts in the West with point guard Aaron Brooks and wing Malik Hairston. The latter is a stud newcomer who could end up being one and done in Oregon. The Ducks also return key members of their frontline with Ian Crosswhite and Matt Short. The addition of Maarty Leunen will be a plus inside, too. Oregon has one of the toughest homecourts in the country, and Hairston should flourish in his new home.

WHY NOT: Luke Jackson did so much for this squad a year ago that it's putting a lot on Hairston to duplicate his efforts. But he will get the shot to be the BMOC in Eugene.

SUMMER BUZZ: The Ducks took a few shots for chartering a personal jet for Hairston's recruitment, but they landed the prize of the late signing period. Oregon has a shot to be the fourth-place team in the Pac-10 ahead of UCLA, USC, Cal, Arizona State, Oregon State and Washington State.

44. UCLA

WHY: Ben Howland has a team worthy of the top 50. The recruiting class rivals any he brought in at Pittsburgh. The Bruins expect Jordan Farmer to be an impact player for them. Josh Shipp and Aaron Afflalo should also be major contributors. The return of veterans Dijon Thompson, Cedric Bozeman, Brian Morrison, Ryan Hollins and Michael Fey gives the Bruins the experience needed to ease the transition of the freshmen.

WHY NOT: The Bruins still need to decide on who their go-to player will be (Thompson?) and need to continue to develop the necessary toughness to move higher in the conference.

SUMMER BUZZ: Hollins has been banged up and took himself out of the USA Basketball trials. Thompson returned after flirting with the NBA at the draft camp. The biggest loss was Trevor Ariza, who made the mistake of staying in the draft and going in the second round after his freshman season.

45. Texas Tech

WHY: Bob Knight. He's obviously one of the best coaches of all time, and the Red Raiders should be in position for an NCAA bid because of his expertise. Losing Andre Emmett's scoring is a major hit. But this team has quickness at all five positions and should be an even better defensive team. Ronald Ross, Jarius Jackson, Devonne Giles and Josh Washington could form the core of this team for next season.

WHY NOT: The Red Raiders will need help from their recruiting class. But it's unknown how talented this crew will be for Knight. This team will be better later than earlier.

SUMMER BUZZ: If Ohio State made the push for Knight, then he might have bolted. Pat Knight was ready to take over if that were the case. Now that Knight has remained at Texas Tech, the Red Raiders will continue to own one of the toughest homecourts in the Big 12 and be in the NCAA bid race again.

46. Arkansas

WHY: It's time for the Razorbacks to make a move, even in the top-heavy SEC West. Arkansas lost Al Jefferson to the NBA before ever getting the power forward. But Stan Heath was prepared by signing four other forwards. The Razorbacks also bring back the core of their team with Ronnie Brewer, Eric Ferguson, Olu Famutimi, Jonathon Modica and Kendrick Davis -- five of the top six scorers from a year ago.

WHY NOT: Arkansas has no excuse if it's not in position to be an NCAA team. The 4-12 mark was a bit disappointing last season in the SEC. This team is talented enough to make a run and be a bubble team out of the SEC.

SUMMER BUZZ: The Razorbacks did hold out some flicker of hope that Jefferson wouldn't like his draft status and still come to Fayetteville. But that was clearly shot down once the Celtics picked him at No. 15.

47. UTEP

WHY: Billy Gillispie didn't build a one-hit wonder. UTEP was a program, not just a team last season. That means Doc Sadler inherits a squad that is ready-made to win the WAC. Holding off Rice and Nevada won't be easy, but the Miners have the parts in place with Filiberto Rivera, Jason Williams, Omar Thomas and John Tofi. UTEP will still be a real tough team to beat in El Paso.

WHY NOT: Losing Roy Smallwood and Chris Craig hurts, and the unknown on the recruiting class (star recruit Alex Galindo went to Kansas when Gillispie left) adds to the question marks.

SUMMER BUZZ: Sadler was the natural choice to replace Gillispie. But losing assistant Sergio Rouco will hurt, too. The Miners are hoping that James Holland, a former assistant at Georgia, can be a hit on the recruiting trail and on the court.

48. Xavier

WHY: Sean Miller won't miss a beat in replacing Thad Matta. This team should still be one of the top teams to beat in the Atlantic 10. Sure, Lionel Chalmers, Romain Sato and Anthony Myles are all gone. But the Musketeers still have a rising star in Dedrick Finn, one of the top shooting forwards in Justin Doellman, a real gem in Justin Cage and decent role players in Will Caudle and Keith Jackson. Adding Vanderbilt transfer forward Brian Thornton will have an immediate impact. So, too, will recruits point Churchill Odia and forward Josh Duncan.

WHY NOT: Losing three veterans isn't an easy chore. Chalmers, Sato and Myles turned the team around when it was on the verge of dipping below .500 and into the NIT. But there is enough returning for Miller to continue the NCAA run.

SUMMER BUZZ: Matta bolted for Ohio State, but Miller was always ready to take over the program. There might not be a more smooth transition between head and assistant coach as Matta to Miller.

49. UAB

WHY: The Blazers were the surprise of the NCAA Tournament, beating Kentucky in a stunner to reach the Sweet 16. But Mike Anderson isn't through. He should have UAB in position for another potential berth. Losing Mo Finley and Gabe Kennedy hurts, but the Blazers still have Donnell and Ronnell Taylor, Demario Eddins and Marques Lewis.

WHY NOT: The Blazers are still in a top-heavy Conference USA, meaning leaping ahead of Louisville, Cincinnati, Charlotte and Memphis will be quite a chore. They have a shot to be equal with Marquette and make a push for six bids.

SUMMER BUZZ: Anderson got a hefty payday by flirting with Auburn. Not bad for a coach who couldn't get a sniff for a head coaching job while he was an assistant at Arkansas.

50. Utah

WHY: Ray Giacoletti walked into a ready-made situation for at least an NCAA run. Andrew Bogut is back as the former Eastern Washington coach's anchor. Marc Jackson decided to play ball again now that Rick Majerus departed, and he'll help stabilize the backcourt of Tim Drisdom and Richard Chaney. Jackson gives them a third guard who can handle the ball. The trio is talented enough to make the Utes a co-favorite with Air Force for the title again.

WHY NOT: The bench could be a question mark and this team still needs to adjust to Giacoletti. But the pieces are in place for the Utes to hold off UNLV in the pursuit of the Falcons.

SUMMER BUZZ: There was some doubt if Bogut would return. He considered a foreign deal instead of the NBA draft. Getting him to commit for his sophomore season was Giacoletti's biggest summer recruit.
