Tubbs moves from Oklahoma sidelines
Oklahoma assistant Jimmy Tubbs will be announced as the new head coach at SMU on Friday, multiple sources close to the search told ESPN.com.
SMU has scheduled an 11:30 a.m. ET news conference Friday.
Tubbs, 55, replaces Mike Dement, who was fired after nine seasons. Upon Dement's termination, SMU had five regular-season games and the WAC tournament left on its schedule.
Tubbs, 55, was an assistant to Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson for two seasons. He also was an assistant at SMU for 12 seasons prior to his leaving for Norman. Previously, Tubbs coached at Dallas Kimball High. He is not related to former Oklahoma coach Billy Tubbs.
SMU also interviewed Kansas assistant Norm Roberts, Michigan State assistant Doug Wojcik, Stanford assistant Eric Reveno, American's Jeff Jones and Indiana assistant John Treloar.
Tubbs had a strong endorsement from Arizona State coach Rob Evans, who is close friends with SMU president Gerald Turner.
SMU is coming off a 12-18 season (5-13 WAC), which included wins over top 25 teams Purdue and Texas Tech. The Mustangs return one of the best guards in the conference in Bryan Hopkins.
