How They Got Here
Illinois 65, W. Kentucky 60 | Notre Dame 70, Wis.-Milwaukee 69
What to Watch: Freshmen came up big for both the Illini and Irish in their openers. Dee Brown, Deron Williams and James Augustine combined for 37 Illinois' points, while Torin Francis hit the game-winning put-back for Notre Dame. But expect the stars to shine in this one, as Illini senior Brian Cook could have a big day against the Irish inside and ND point Chris Thomas (27 points Thursday) could give Brown fits outside.

SOUTH REGION: No. 5 Connecticut vs. No. 4 Stanford |

How They Got Here
Stanford 77, San Diego 69 | Connecticut 58, BYU 53
What to Watch: If UConn can sink a few outside shots, Stanford could be in trouble. But that's no given, considering the Huskies' guards went a combined 5 for 28 from the field against BYU. Ben Gordon hit four of those FGs, while Taliek Brown missed all seven of his shots. Fortunately, Emeka Okafor was inside to clean up enough errant shots. Stanford will throw big bodies at Okafor, but the Cardinal's success may rely more on what UConn doesn't do, rather than what Josh Childress, Julius Barnes and Matt Lottich are able to do.

MIDWEST REGION: No. 6 Missouri vs. No. 3 Marquette |

Indianapolis

How They Got Here
Missouri 72, So. Illinois 71 | Marquette 72, Holy Cross 68
What to Watch: These are two teams who have to feel fortunate to escape the first round -- Missouri on a questionable call late in the game and Marquette on the strength of a new hero named Travis Diener. The Tigers will look to pound the ball inside to Arthur Johnson (24 points Thursday), while its slashing perimeter players look for holes in a very good Marquette defense. The Golden Eagles will need the usually reliable Dwyane Wade to be effective for two halves, Wade had just two of his 15 points against Cross in the first half, to get into the Sweet 16. |

EAST REGION: No. 8 California vs. No. 1 Oklahoma |

Oklahoma City

How They Got Here
Oklahoma 71, S.C. State 54 | California 76, N.C. State 74 (OT)
What to Watch: The health of the Sooners will be a continuing story in this tournament. Hollis Price played just 11 minutes while nursing a strained groin, while Kevin Bookout played just nine minutes because of strep throat. Neither was needed in the first-round rout, but both need to be effective if OU is going to beat a Cal team with plenty of offense and momentum after Day 1's most memorable victory. |

WEST REGION: No. 9 Gonzaga vs. No. 1 Arizona
|

Salt Lake City

How They Got Here
Arizona 80, Vermont 51 | Gonzaga 74, Cincinnati 69
What to Watch: Both Jason Gardner and Blake Stepp had off-shooting days in the first round, but it's imperative that Stepp's shot return if the Zags are going to pull off a second-round shocker. Arizona has enough scorers to pick up the slack (see: Stoudamire, Frye, Adams ...), while Ronny Turiaf can't be expected to repeat his 22 and 10 performance.

MIDWEST REGION: No. 13 Tulsa vs. No. 5 Wisconsin
|

Spokane, Wash.

How They Got Here
Wisconsin 81, Weber State 74 | Tulsa 84, Dayton 71
What to Watch: The upset most expected in Spokane came on Thursday, just a game later than expected. As a result, Wisconsin proved itself worthy of a Big Ten champion, and gets a Tulsa team peaking at the right time out of the WAC. Both teams shot lights-out Thursday, Tulsa hitting 57 percent of its shots, while Wisconsin made 53 percent of its attempts. The best matchup is in the backcourt, where Tulsa's Jason Parker goes up against senior Kiwi Kirk Penny. |

WEST REGION: No. 10 Arizona State vs. No. 2 Kansas

Oklahoma City

How They Got Here
Kansas 64, Utah State 61 | Arizona State 84, Memphis 71
What to Watch: Ike Diogu. If you haven't seen this freshman at work, you're in for a treat. Unless you're a fan of Kansas. The 6-8, 242-pounder scored 22 against Memphis, hitting 9 of 11 shots, including two from 3-point range. Sounds a lot like a certain Jayhawk, huh? Yes, how well Nick Collison can keep Diogu in check may be the key to the Jayhawks moving into the Sweet 16. ASU and KU have shooters, but the big men will dictate how this game plays out. |

WEST REGION: No. 11 Central Michigan vs. No. 3 Duke
|

Salt Lake City

How They Got Here
Duke 67, Colorado State 57 | C. Michigan 79, Creighton 73
What to Watch: Duke's freshmen took their first step in the Dance, but it was nearly a cameo appearance for Coach K's kids. Not a great road team, expect Duke to play better -- and it better -- because the Chippewas showed why the MAC is always dangerous this time of year. Chris Kaman had an "off night" with just 12 points, so expect the nation's top center nobody's seen until this week to step up. Duke doesn't have anyone who can match up with the 7-footer who averages 23 points a game, so expect Duke to run and keep the action from becoming a half-court game. |
