CLEVELAND -- Cleveland State guard Modibo Niakate was reinstated to the team Monday after being dismissed in September for a violation of team rules.

Niakate, a 6-foot-2 senior, will be redshirted for the remainder of the season and practice with the team. His status for next season will be determined in the spring, the university said.

Coach Mike Garland said he has seen a change in Niakate since the fall and believes he deserves another chance. Niakate continued to attend classes after his dismissal from the team.

Niakate averaged 11.9 points last season after transferring from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. He played in 26 games, starting 15, and led the Horizon League by shooting 44 percent from 3-point range.

Niakate, a native of Paris, attended Sacred Heart-Griffin High School in Springfield, Ill.
