Action is unrelated to internal probe
WACO, Texas -- Baylor senior starters Terrance Thomas and R.T. Guinn were ruled academically ineligible, leaving the Bears with just five scholarship players.
Thomas, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, and Guinn both were on the bench but not in uniform for Saturday's 76-65 loss to No. 21 Purdue.
Michael Rogers, the school's faculty representative to the Big 12 and NCAA, said the players' ineligibility isn't related to the school's internal investigation of the basketball program.
Thomas led the Bears, averaging 18.6 points and 8.0 rebounds. Guinn averaged 11.2 points, and was second on the team with 5.2 rebounds. Both had started the first 11 games.
"It changes everything, X and O wise. You only have so many weapons in the barrel," coach Scott Drew said. "Terrence and R.T. were great on the bench, they helped make sure we stayed focused. They are on the team and are part of the team."
Drew, however, wouldn't elaborate on their long-term standing with the program.
The players weren't made available for comment.
Four of Baylor's five starters Saturday played 36 minutes. At times, Drew had all five of his non-scholarship players on the floor at the same time.
Junior guard Ellis Kidd Jr. was dismissed from the program Dec. 16 for violating team policy. Drew said then that Kidd's dismissal wasn't related to the investigation of NCAA violations.
Kidd averaged 13.4 points and 4.0 rebounds in seven games, all starts.
The school's investigation committee is looking into violations in the men's basketball program that occurred under former coach Dave Bliss. The university has imposed a two-year probation against itself and won't play in the Big 12 tournament this season.
The violations became known following the disappearance of player Patrick Dennehy this summer. His body was found in July after he had been reported missing six weeks earlier. He had been shot twice in the head and former teammate Carlton Dotson has been charged with murder in the death.
