Mountaineers next face College of Charleston

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Noah Brown scored 11 points to lead Appalachian State to a 68-59 win over The Citadel on Wednesday night in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament.

No. 3 North seed Appalachian State (17-11) will play No. 2 South seed College of Charleston in a quarterfinal game Thursday.

Donny McLendon scored 30 points and hit five 3-pointers for No. 6 South seed The Citadel (12-16), the only Bulldog in double figures.

D.J. Thompson and Jeremy Clayton scored 10 points each for Appalachian State.

The Bulldogs had a 42-38 lead with 11:28 left, but two Clayton dunks in 10 seconds capped a 12-1 Appalachian State run and gave the Mountaineers a 50-43 lead with nine minutes remaining.

The Citadel cut the score to 52-51 minutes later, but Appalachian State's D.J. Thompson responded with a four-point play to up the lead to 56-51 with 6:29 left. The Bulldogs would get no closer than three points after that.

Neither team had more than a five-point lead in the first half, which ended with Appalachian State leading 28-26.
