Pierce's trial now likely to be delayed
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Former Iowa basketball player Pierre Pierce waived his right to a speedy trial Wednesday.
Pierce was charged with two counts of first-degree burglary, assault with intent to commit sexual abuse and fourth-degree criminal mischief. He was accused of assaulting a former girlfriend and ransacking her home in January.
Pierce asserted his right to a speedy trial during his arraignment last month, requiring prosecutors to bring him to trial within 90 days. By waiving his right to a speedy trial, his trial, set for May 10, likely will be delayed.
Pierce was the Hawkeyes' leading scorer before he was kicked off the team in early February.
