Wainwright replaces Leitao, who left for UVa
CHICAGO -- Jerry Wainwright is leaving Richmond to take over the DePaul basketball program, the university confirmed Wednesday.
Wainwright, a Berwyn native who had a 50-41 record in three seasons at Richmond, replaces Dave Leitao, who left for Virginia earlier this month.
ESPN.com senior writer Andy Katz reports that Wainwright is expected to sign a five-year deal, ranging from $500,000 to $700,000, according to a source close to the negotiation. Western Michigan's Steve Hawkins also interviewed for the position, according to Katz.
DePaul plans to introduce Wainwright at a news conference Thursday, university spokesman Scott Reed said.
The 58-year-old Wainwright has led teams to the NCAA tournament in three of the last six seasons: Richmond in 2004 and North Carolina-Wilmington in 2000 and 2002.
During eight seasons at N.C.-Wilmington, Wainwright was 136-103, including a 23-10 mark in 2002, when the team upset Southern California in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Wainwright was an assistant coach at Wake Forest from 1986 to 1994, serving under head coaches Bob Staak and Dave Odom, before taking his first head coaching job at N.C.-Wilmington in 1994.
Katz indicates that Wainwright will take with him assistant coach Gary DeCesare, a noted New York-area coach who could recruit well for DePaul as it prepares to enter the Big East next season. Wainwright will also bring his son, Scott, an assistant on Richmond's staff.
DePaul finished 20-11 overall and 10-6 in Conference USA last season and made it to the second round of the NIT. The Blue Demons will join the Big East beginning in the 2005-06 season as part of a 16-team conference that will add Marquette, Cincinnati, Louisville and South Florida.
