Western Carolina will hire Larry Hunter, currently the associate head coach at NC State, as its new head coach, a source close to the process has told ESPN's Dick Vitale.

An official announcement is expected Friday.

Hunter has 25 years of experience as a head coach, including 12 at Ohio University, where he was the Mid-American Conference coach of the year in 1993-94.

Hunter also had a great run from 1976-89 as the head coach at Wittenburg University, a successful Division III program. He was named national Division III coach of the year in 1977, when he led Wittenburg to the national championship.

As a head coach, Hunter has an overall career record of 509-224.

Hunter joined NC State's staff as an assistant in May 2001, becoming associate head coach to Herb Sendek in August 2002.

At Western Carolina, Hunter will replace Steve Shurina, who was reassigned by the university to a teaching position in mid-April after compiling a five-year record of 48-97.
