Lorenzo Gordon, the Missouri Valley Conference newcomer of the year, has been dismissed from Illinois State for academic reasons, the school announced Thursday.
Gordon led the Redbirds in scoring (16.3 points per game) and rebounding (6.5 rebounds per game) last season.
"Obviously I can't speak for the university on this matter," head coach Porter Moser said in a release. "Lorenzo is a great kid who has been working hard in the classroom and on the court, but we're disappointed that he didn't meet the academic requirements set forth by the university. At Illinois State we hold ourselves to very high academic standards and I am sad and disappointed to see him go."
With the loss of Gordon, Illinois State only returns one starter from last year's 17-13 squad.
