Beard resigns from Morgan State after 4-26 season
BALTIMORE -- Butch Beard resigned Tuesday as head coach of Morgan State after going 39-105 since taking over the struggling program in 2001.
The Bears were 4-26 this season, including 4-14 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. They lost their first 18 games before beating Howard University.
"I am leaving Morgan State to pursue other opportunities, and wish Morgan State and its basketball program success in the future," Beard said in a statement.
Beard, a former NBA standout and coach, led Morgan State to a 14-16 record in 2004-2005 -- the team's best record since a 14-14 mark in 1998-99. But he couldn't sustain the success.
Beard is 79-184 in seven years as a college coach, including a stint at Howard.
