HAMPTON, Va. -- Hampton hired Kevin Nickelberry as basketball coach Friday.

The 41-year-old Nickelberry served as recruiting coordinator for Clemson for the past three seasons.

He replaces Bobby Collins, who resigned March 16, two days after the Pirates lost the NCAA Tournament opening-round game to Monmouth.

"We are pleased to add Coach Nickelberry to our athletics staff," interim athletic director Joe Taylor said in a statement. "He brings with him a strong commitment to excellence."

Nickelberry has served as an assistant men's coach at Charlotte, Holy Cross, Monmouth, Howard and Columbia Union College in Maryland. He was Columbia Union's women's head coach for three seasons.
