Nevada's Johnson academically ineligible
RENO, Nev. -- Nevada forward Demarshay Johnson will miss at least the start of the 2006-07 basketball season because he has been declared academically ineligible for the fall semester, coach Mark Fox said Wednesday.
Johnson, 6-foot-9, 210 pounds, started 16 games and appeared in all 33 as a junior last season. He averaged 5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in what was his first year at Nevada after transferring from Diablo Valley College.
"We are very disappointed in Demarshay's efforts in the classroom. Once he has taken the proper steps to become eligible, we look forward to him joining us again," Fox said in a statement.
Nevada athletic director Cary Groth said that Fox and his staff "have a very strong commitment to producing young men who excel on the court and in the classroom."
"I commend and fully support their efforts to provide our student-athletes with the tools and support they need to be successful," she said.
