Olson adds Brase, Mermuys to Arizona coaching staff
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona coach Lute Olson once joked that he tried to discourage his grandson, Matt Brase, from going into coaching.
But Brase decided to enter the profession, and Olson named him to his staff on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Brase, who played for Arizona from 2003-05, will serve as the Wildcats' administrative assistant and video coordinator.
Olson also named Jesse Mermuys, a former basketball coach at Tucson's Salpointe Catholic High School, as director of basketball operations. Mermuys, 26, comes to the Wildcat staff from New Mexico State, where he served as video coordinator. He was also an assistant coach at Southern Utah University.
Mermuys and Brase fill the vacancies created when former Wildcat Reggie Geary left for an assistant coaching position with the NBA Development League and Jack Murphy took the head video coordinators position with the Denver Nuggets.
