STORRS, Conn. -- Connecticut freshman center Hasheem Thabeet has been declared eligible by the NCAA to play this season, the school announced Wednesday.

Rick Burnham/Icon SMIThabeet, a 7-3 center for UConn, was deemed eligible Wednesday to play during the upcoming season.
Thabeet, a 7-foot-3 center from Tanzania, had been seeking a ruling from the NCAA on whether he met some core curriculum requirements.

The case was complex because Thabeet was educated in both Tanzania and in the United States. He attended Cyprus Community Christian School in Houston last year.

Thabeet is expected to be UConn's starting center.

Coach Jim Calhoun was notified Tuesday evening that Thabeet has been declared eligible, UConn spokesman Kyle Muncy said.

He already has completed six hours worth of courses at the university and is enrolled in five others, Calhoun said earlier this month.
