Winthrop head coach expected to stay put
Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall withdrew from the South Florida search Sunday night, opening up the possibilities for three other candidates, according to multiple sources.
Two of the candidates are former Big East coaches turned broadcasters. Pete Gillen was once at Providence, but most recently at Virginia, and is working the NCAA Tournament for Westwood One Radio after doing TV work for CSTV. ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla coached at St. John's, and more recently New Mexico. Rounding out the field is South Alabama coach John Pelphrey, who was once an assistant at Florida.
The Bulls had given Marshall a Sunday deadline to see if he was ready to pursue the job to its finish. An offer was never officially given to Marshall, but he did visit USF Friday and Saturday with his wife. The Bulls are seeking a replacement for Robert McCullum.
