Bobby Lutz took his time, but decided he'd rather stay at Charlotte than take what would be perceived as a step down at South Alabama.

Lutz was offered the job at South Alabama on Friday and waited until late Saturday night to make a final decision.

In a statement released by the school, Lutz said: "When I was announced as head coach nine years ago, I said it was my dream job. It still is. I am proud to be the head basketball coach at Charlotte. This is where my heart is and always will be. This is home."

Lutz visited the Mobile, Ala., campus Friday. South Alabma athletic director Joe Gottfried was looking to replace John Pelphrey, who left for Arkansas, with Lutz in the hope of nabbing a name coach.

Lutz has been at Charlotte for the past nine years and taken Charlotte to seven postseason appearances, including five NCAA trips and two NIT berths. He has two years remaining on his current contract.

Former Arizona State coach Rob Evans is interested in pursuing the South Alabama opening and could be one of the names Gottfried looks to now that Lutz is out.
