BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech point guard Nigel Munson, considered the likely starter in 2007-08, has been granted a conditional release from his scholarship, coach Seth Greenberg said Wednesday.

Greenberg declined to disclose the conditions of Munson's release. Munson had expressed an interest in transferring to a school closer to his Washington, D.C., home because of a personal issue.

As a freshman last season Munson played in 32 games and averaged 3.0 points and 1.1 assists as a backup to senior starter Jamon Gordon.

Munson's departure means the Hokies will rely on two freshmen to play point guard: 5-foot-9 Hank Thorns and 6-3 Malcolm Delaney.
