Ohio U-Chillicothe player dies after collapsing in practice
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- An Ohio University-Chillicothe basketball player died after collapsing during practice.
Jonathan Davis, 20, a sophomore from Hampton, Va., fell to the floor Monday evening and was taken to Adena Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, school spokesman Jack Jeffery said.
The school was not aware that Davis had any health problems, he said. A message was left with the county coroner.
The school suspended men's and women's sports events and practices. Grief counselors were made available for teammates and classmates.
The school, about 45 miles south of Columbus, is a branch of Ohio University's main campus in Athens. It plays NCAA basketball at a non-scholarship level.
Davis' teammates included two cousins, Jim Jones and D.J. Davis. Jones told the Newport News Daily Press that the three of them were close, and when Jonathan Davis chose to attend Ohio-Chillicothe because his father lived nearby, the two cousins joined him because they wanted to play on the same team.
"They called us the Three Stooges, and we were like brothers," Jones told the Daily Press. "He was a great person who loved music, loved football and basketball, loved his little sister and his mom. He was clown. He made everybody laugh."
Memorial arrangements are pending.
